A quilt made with 1930s reproduction fabric is a modern quilt sewn from contemporary prints designed to echo textiles of the Great Depression era. For a convincing period-inspired result, prioritize small-scale motifs, clear light-and-dark contrast, and a varied mix of florals and geometrics—not one supposedly mandatory palette. Broken Star, Broken Circle/Suspension Bridge, Grandmother’s Fan, and sampler quilts are natural pattern directions.
What are 1930s reproduction fabrics?
They are modern fabrics whose prints, colors, scale, or motifs are based on textiles associated with the 1930s. Some are reproduced from vintage swatches; others interpret the era rather than copy a specific original. Unless a fabric’s provenance establishes its age, describe it as “1930s reproduction” or “1930s-inspired,” not vintage.

Quilting patterns circulated through catalogs and magazines, while advice often framed quilting as a thrifty activity. Factory cut-aways left from clothing production were also advertised in bundles. At the same time, quilt kits offered coordinated, ready-made fabric components. The International Quilt Museum notes that kits were presented in the 1920s and 1930s as a modern, time-saving way to make a well-designed bedcovering, and that Broken Star was among the era’s popular designs. The museum’s account of quilts in the modern age and World Quilts’ overview of Depression-era quilting provide more historical context.
How to choose fabric for a 1930s-style quilt
There is no single checklist that makes a quilt authentic to the decade. Small prints and cheerful colors are common cues, but surviving quilts and revival fabrics vary. Judge the fabric in the size and arrangement you plan to sew.
#1 Best Overall
- Darlene's Favorites collection from Robert Kaufman Fabrics
- Designed by Darlene Zimmerman
- Fat Quarter Bundle includes 33 18-inch by 22-inch fat quarters
- 100% Cotton; premium quilt shop quality fabric
- Scale: Check whether the motif will still read in the finished patch. A large flower may lose its shape when cut into a small piece or partly swallowed by seam allowances.
- Value and contrast: Combine light grounds with medium or stronger prints so the block shapes remain visible. Similar colors can blend together even when their motifs differ.
- Palette: Pastel and clear, cheerful pinks, yellows, blues, greens, and lavender-like tones can suggest the period. Red, yellow, and blue-gray also appear in late-1930s and 1940s revival fabrics; avoid treating any one group as a fixed decade-wide rule. The International Quilt Museum’s Colonial Revival exhibition discusses that broader revival context.
- Motif mix: Combine florals with dots, checks, stripes, small geometrics, or novelty figures for a lively, scrappy effect. Repeating one print type throughout can make the quilt feel more coordinated than varied.
- Cutting format: Yardage gives you control over placement and lets you cut unusual shapes. Precuts can reduce measuring and cutting when their dimensions suit the pattern.
Which patterns work well with these fabrics?
Broken Star
Choose this for a bold, geometric quilt. The International Quilt Museum identifies Broken Star as one of the most popular designs of the 1930s. It gives small prints a strong block structure, though the piecing calls for attention to alignment.
Broken Circle or Suspension Bridge
The 1933 Ladies Art Company catalog used the name Broken Circle or Suspension Bridge for a block discussed in the museum’s modern-age exhibition. The historical name offers a documented alternative when you want a geometric block beyond the better-known Broken Star.

Grandmother’s Fan
Fan-shaped pieces provide a good place to feature small florals and contrasting grounds. Missouri Star demonstrates the block with 1930s fabrics in its Aunt Grace Goes Bold project and fabric listing.
A sampler for a mixed stash
Different blocks let you show off a wider range of print scales and colors. Laurie Aaron Hird’s The Farmer’s Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt is a specific starting point: Penguin Random House describes it as a queen-size quilt made from 99 blocks, with instructions for both template piecing and rotary cutting. The publisher’s 2015 listing identifies the paperback as 272 pages. See Penguin Random House’s book page for its details.

- This is a bundle of designer fabrics from popular lines we carry. Each bag will be similar to, but not necessarily the same as, the fabrics shown in the photos, and will always have a variety of colors similar to those shown. These fabrics make wonderfully cheerful projects with their cute animal prints and soft but bright colors
- They have been weighed and packaged, so I cannot do custom requests. Each bundle will have 14 pieces, all fat eighth yard cuts (9" x 22"), and it will total 1.75 yards.
- The fabrics are from mixed designers and are quilt shop quality cotton.
- Multiple purchases will be cut as continuous yardage, so purchasing 2 bundles will give you a fat quarter bundle, and 4 will give you a half yard bundle.
- This is a unique bundle, great for quilts, home decor, or just to add color to your stash! Get it while it lasts!
Where to find Aunt Grace and feedsack-style prints
Retail categories are useful for browsing, but names and stock can change. Missouri Star’s 1930s reproduction fabric collection lists cottons from brands including Marcus Fabrics, P&B Textiles, Riley Blake, Robert Kaufman, and Windham. Its Aunt Grace Goes Bold listing identifies Judie Rothermel as the designer and shows formats including charm packs, 10-inch squares, 2.5-inch strips, fat-quarter bundles, and yardage.
For another coordinated option, Moda describes 30’s Playtime as reproduction prints reminiscent of Depression-era feedsack fabrics and pairs the collection with a downloadable quilt pattern. A retailer’s use of “feedsack” or “reproduction” signals a style reference; it does not by itself prove that a piece is an original feedsack textile.

Match the purchase format to the project
| Format | Useful when |
|---|---|
| Yardage | You need flexible lengths, repeated cuts, borders, or control over where a motif falls. |
| Charm pack or 5-inch squares | The pattern uses small squares and you want a ready-made mix of prints. |
| 10-inch squares | You want larger precut pieces for blocks or additional cutting options. |
| 2.5-inch strips | The design uses strip piecing or narrow strips; they can save time on repeated cuts. |
| Fat-quarter bundle | You want several coordinated prints with enough fabric for a range of patch sizes. |
Before buying, compare the pattern’s required cuts with the pack’s actual dimensions and fabric quantity. Precuts speed up planning only when the included pieces can yield the shapes you need.
