Bannāʾī is a Persian architectural surface technique: a revetment arranged to simulate ornamental brickwork, often with contrasting units forming geometric patterns or, in Timurid examples, pious phrases in square Kufic. “Ancient pixels” is a modern metaphor for the repeated blocks and contrasts—not a historical term, and not proof that every design was made from glazed square tiles.

What bannāʾī means—and what it does not

Iranica describes bannāʾī decoration as revetments covering large wall areas and simulating ornamental brickwork. The word describes the decorative surface, not necessarily the wall’s load-bearing construction. A patterned face can look like part of the masonry without showing that its visible units support the building.

Iranica places prominent examples in 15th-century decorative ensembles. On Timurid panels, simple geometric designs and pious phrases in square Kufic were widely used. This is evidence of an important period of use, not a precise date of invention. Iranica’s account of Persian architecture provides that historical framing.

How to read the pattern

The “pixels” analogy is useful only at the level of visual organization: repeated units and contrasts combine into a larger design. To understand a particular surface, first identify what the visible units are—brick, unglazed terracotta, glazed tile, or tile mosaic—rather than assuming every block-like pattern is made from the same material.

  • Look at the composition: Is it geometric, or does it form writing?
  • Look for square Kufic: Timurid bannāʾī panels could incorporate pious phrases in this script.
  • Separate appearance from structure: A surface that simulates ornamental brickwork does not by itself establish how the wall was built.
  • Check the identification: A patterned tile is not automatically bannāʾī; use that label only when a reliable source identifies the object or surface as such.

Bannāʾī compared with other Iranian ceramic decoration

Medieval Iranian buildings used ceramics for many purposes, including inscriptions, screens, and friezes. These examples help show the range of ceramic architecture, but they should not be relabeled as bannāʾī unless the source does so.

Example or technique Material and surface Date and setting How it relates to bannāʾī
Bannāʾī revetment Surface revetment simulating ornamental brickwork; the definition does not require every example to be glazed tile. Iranica describes prominent 15th-century decorative ensembles and Timurid panels. The term applies to this simulated ornamental-brick surface treatment; it does not establish a wall’s structural role.
Eight-pointed star tile in the British Museum Fritware with blue and lustre decoration over an opaque white glaze. Made in Kashan around 1300–1320; the museum notes glazed tiles were widely used in Iran by the 13th century. A useful comparison for ceramic surface decoration, but the catalogue does not identify this tile as bannāʾī. British Museum catalogue record.
Frieze tile in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Kashan stonepaste tile. Dated 734 AH/1334 CE and linked to the Imamzada ʿAli ibn Jaʿfar tomb complex in Qum. The associated mihrab bears the date and the signature of Yusuf ibn ʿAli Muhammad ibn Abi Tahir, a member of the Abu Tahir family of Kashan potters. An example of ceramic architectural frieze work, not automatically bannāʾī. Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogue record.
Nishapur pierced screen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Painted and glazed ceramic screen. Dated to the 12th century; the museum says it may have served as a light screen or supported air circulation, possibly in association with a badgir wind-catcher. Shows another architectural use of ceramic, distinct from a revetment simulating brickwork. Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogue record.

Lustre is a glaze technique, not another name for bannāʾī

Lustre describes how a ceramic surface is decorated, not the architectural arrangement meant by bannāʾī. The Museum für Islamische Kunst explains that metallic pigment is painted onto an already-glazed surface and fired a second time in a smoke-filled kiln. Reduced oxygen allows the metals to bond to the glaze and create a shimmering effect. The museum identifies Kashan as a place where the technique was mastered and refined. Museum für Islamische Kunst: luster ceramics.

Why the distinction matters

Calling every patterned ceramic surface “bannāʾī” blurs differences among a simulated-brick revetment, a tile used in a frieze, a pierced screen, and a lustre-decorated object. The term is most useful when it identifies the surface treatment described by Iranica: ornamental brickwork simulated across a wall, sometimes carrying geometric designs or square-Kufic phrases. The comparison objects document related materials and practices, not interchangeable names for one technique.
