For a quick autumn craft, print freshly fallen leaves with paint and paper. If you have time to prepare leaves, press them for decorations such as bunting or seal them between wax-paper sheets to make ornaments. A flower press is optional: a heavy book works for pressing, too.
Choose a leaf craft by how much time you have
| Craft | Leaf preparation | Tools and heat | Finished project |
|---|---|---|---|
| Painted leaf prints | Use freshly fallen leaves; no pressing wait | Paper, poster paint, paintbrush | Printed artwork or cards |
| Wax-paper ornaments | Press leaves for at least one week, until flat and dry | Wax paper, cloths, iron; adult or older-child handling only | Hanging or tabletop decorations |
| Pressed-leaf bunting | RHS instructions allow two to four weeks for drying, depending on leaf size, moisture, and thickness | Paper or card, glue, hole punch, string or ribbon; no iron in the bunting steps | Flags or a simple leaf-and-string display |
The timings above come from the specific activity instructions, not from a guarantee that every leaf will dry at the same rate. For pressing, the Royal Horticultural Society describes both a flower press and a heavy-book method using kitchen or tissue paper: RHS guidance on pressing flowers and leaves.
Make quick prints with fresh leaves
Leaf printing is the easiest option when you want to start right away. The National Trust for Scotland’s activity uses freshly fallen leaves, paper, poster paint, and paintbrushes. The underside of a leaf often has raised veins that make an interesting impression.

- Gather fallen leaves and lay out paper, poster paints, and brushes.
- Brush paint onto the underside of a leaf.
- Set the leaf paint-side down on the paper and press gently so it makes contact across the surface.
- Lift the leaf carefully to reveal the print. Repaint and repeat with different leaves or colors.
For a family-friendly version of the activity, see the National Trust for Scotland’s leaf-printing instructions. If the print is uneven, try a thinner coat of paint or press more evenly across the leaf rather than rubbing it around.
Press leaves for ornaments and other decorations
Pressing leaves without a flower press
A dedicated flower press is not essential. Place leaves between sheets of kitchen or tissue paper, then sandwich them in a heavy book or under other weight. The RHS describes a two-to-four-week drying period for its pressed-leaf activities; the right time depends on leaf size, moisture, and thickness. Check that the leaves are dry and flat before using them in a project.

- Place a pressed, dry leaf between two sheets of wax paper.
- Put a dishcloth above and another below the wax paper. The cloth barrier keeps the iron away from the paper.
- With an adult or older child handling the iron, iron gently on its lowest setting. Keep the iron off bare wax paper.
- When the sheets are sealed, cut around the leaf, leaving about half an inch of wax-paper margin.
- For a hanging ornament, punch a hole through the margin and add string. Leave it as it is for a tabletop decoration.
Follow the Peabody Essex Museum leaf-ornament activity for its full instructions. The museum advises placing cloth between the iron and wax paper; the RHS likewise states, “Please ensure only adults or older children handle the iron.” Do not treat sealed leaves as permanently colorfast: the sources describe ways to preserve leaves, but do not promise that their color will last indefinitely.
Make bunting from pressed leaves
For bunting, gather fully dried, pressed leaves, paper or card, glue, a hole punch, and string or ribbon. The RHS gives two to four weeks as a typical drying time for its pressing activities, with leaf size, moisture, and thickness affecting how long it takes.

The RHS autumn leaf bunting activity also describes a delicate version, with leaves pierced using a safety needle, and a simpler display made by pegging leaves onto string. Use the paper-flag version if you prefer not to pierce fragile leaves.

Extra leaves can become botanical bookmarks, herbarium specimens, or scrapbook material, as the RHS suggests. The Woodland Trust also offers ideas such as leaf animals, wreaths, rubbings, and prints. For projects involving wax or heat, stick to the wax-paper method above rather than casually dipping leaves in hot paraffin: Texas Parks and Wildlife warns that overheated paraffin can burst into flame and melted paraffin can cause burns. Its autumn leaves guide discusses preservation options and this heat hazard.
