How Salvaged Flip-Flops Become Animal Art in Kenya

Kenya’s Ocean Sole turns discarded flip-flops into handmade animal sculptures. Here’s how the process works, what the origin story says about toys, and what current impact figures do—and don’t—show.

In Kenya, discarded flip-flops are collected, cleaned, sorted by colour and carved into vivid animal sculptures. Ocean Sole is the enterprise most closely associated with the craft. The word “toys” belongs to its origin story: children made playthings from beach debris, while products documented today are mainly sold as handmade art, decor and gifts—not as certified children’s toys.

How do old flip-flops become toys and sculptures in Kenya?

The story begins with beach waste and practical reuse. Ocean Sole’s history traces an inspiration to local women making crafts from washed-up flip-flops on Kiwayu Island. In an Ocean Sole account, women cleaning beaches made toys from discarded footwear and other beach waste for children; the idea later developed into colourful flip-flop sculptures used to raise awareness about conservation. The sources give different milestone dates rather than one definitive founding year: Panorama Solutions places Julie Church’s work on Kiwayu in 1997, while Ocean Sole’s own history describes early craft activity and later formalization. Ocean Sole’s history and the Panorama Solutions case study offer their respective accounts.

Panorama Solutions also recounts an early WWF Switzerland order for 15,000 turtle key rings, estimated by the case study to use 1,000 kilograms of discarded flip-flops. That is a historical case-study figure, not a current product or a measure of present-day production.

How Ocean Sole processes the flip-flops

Ocean Sole says the footwear comes from Kenyan beaches, waterways and landfills. Its published process describes collection through community entrepreneurs, followed by washing and disinfecting by a women’s group. The flip-flops are sorted by colour before artists carve them into forms. Ocean Sole’s making-process account describes the company’s approach; independent reports have described footwear gathered during coastal cleanups and delivered to a Nairobi workshop.

  1. Collect: Discarded flip-flops are gathered from beaches, waterways and landfills in Kenya, including through community collection efforts.
  2. Clean and sort: The collected footwear is washed and disinfected, then sorted by colour.
  3. Carve the design: Artists layer and carve the material into animal shapes. Earlier ITV reporting also describes gluing and moulding as part of the craft process.
  4. Sand and wash: The carved sculpture is sanded by hand and machine, then washed again, according to Ocean Sole’s production account.

The colour is supplied by the original flip-flops rather than a uniform finish, so Ocean Sole says a handmade piece can look different from its product photograph. The company lists animals including elephants, turtles, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, dolphins and whales. AFP/Africanews reported that offcuts and harder plastic that cannot be sculpted may be shredded for mattress filler; that secondary use is described in its 2022 report, not as a claim that every scrap is reused.

Are the flip-flop animals toys or sculptures?

Both descriptions appear in accounts of the work, but they refer to different contexts. Children’s toys are part of the origin story, and ITV and AFP/Africanews have described toys among the products associated with Ocean Sole. Current official pages generally present the items as sculptures, art, decor or gifts. For example, the Ocean Sole shop lists handmade animal sculptures.

The reviewed product descriptions do not establish age recommendations, toy-safety testing or certification. A reader can therefore describe these as animal sculptures made from salvaged flip-flops, but should not assume that a current sculpture is tested or intended for children’s play.

What do published production and impact figures say?

Published figures differ by date and metric, and Ocean Sole’s totals are company-reported rather than independently audited in the sources cited here. They should be read as separate claims, not added together or treated as directly comparable.

Figure Attribution and qualification
15,000 turtle key rings; estimated 1,000 kg of flip-flops Panorama Solutions’ undated case study recounts this as an early WWF Switzerland order and its estimated material use.
About 1.2 tonnes received weekly; more than 40 tonnes per year Ocean Sole production supervisor Jonathan Lenato, quoted by AFP/Africanews in 2022, described the volume received and annualized it in the interview.
750,000 to one million flip-flops recycled a year; around 100 full-time jobs AFP/Africanews reported these as Ocean Sole figures in 2022.
10,000+ flip-flops recycled every week Ocean Sole’s current website claim, accessed October 4, 2026.
3M+ flip-flops upcycled since 2011; 34K sculptures made in 2025; 100+ Kenyans employed Figures shown on Ocean Sole’s US nonprofit homepage, accessed October 4, 2026. The 34K figure refers to sculptures made in 2025, not flip-flops recycled.

The weekly count on Ocean Sole’s current site does not align cleanly with AFP/Africanews’ 2022 annual estimate. The available figures do not explain the difference, so neither should be presented as a correction to the other. The current claims appear on Ocean Sole’s website and its US nonprofit homepage.

Why the material is collected—and what the numbers do not prove

In AFP/Africanews’ 2022 report, collection coordinator Lillian Mulupi explained the appeal and the disposal problem: “Flip-flops are the most common, most affordable pair of shoes for a lot of people; rich, poor, everybody has got a pair. Since they’re very easy to afford, when a pair is done, you just throw it away get a new one.”

Lenato also told AFP/Africanews: “Weekly, we receive about 1.2 tonnes (of flip flops, ed.), so turn this into months and then, into the whole year actually it’s like more than 40 tonnes per year. It’s a lot of flip flops …. Also, the artists who are working here, most of them converted from the wood carving. On that side, we are saving trees which is good for our environment.” These are interview statements, not independent environmental measurements. The published totals show reported collection, recycling and employment figures; they do not by themselves establish a verified lifecycle or emissions impact.

What to check when choosing a sculpture as a gift

If you are considering a recycled flip-flop animal sculpture, treat it as handmade display art unless a seller provides clear evidence that a particular item is a safety-tested toy. Useful points to compare include:

  • Animal and design: Choose the species and pose that fit the recipient or display space.
  • Dimensions: Check the listed size rather than relying on a photograph for scale.
  • Colour variation: Because the material’s colour comes from salvaged footwear, a handmade item may differ from the image.
  • Use and safety information: Look for explicit age guidance and toy-safety certification if the intended use is children’s play; do not infer either from the word “toy” in a historical account.
  • Price, shipping and seller: Confirm current terms with the retailer. The existence of Ocean Sole sculptures does not establish availability from any specific marketplace or seller.

Ocean Sole describes its work as handmade sculptures, gifts, decor, installations and commissions; ITV has also reported exports to zoos, aquariums, museums and shops. A related Kenyan marine-waste initiative, the Flipflopi Project, is separate: an August 2025 IDEAS profile describes its waste-plastic-and-flip-flop boat and broader waste-management work. Those activities and metrics should not be attributed to Ocean Sole.
