Canva has separate controls for design dimensions and download quality. To change a design’s dimensions, open it and select Resize, then choose a suggested size or Custom size. To adjust a JPG or PNG download, use Share → Download and change the available size or quality settings.
For print, Canva identifies PDF Print as its 300 dpi option. A larger export cannot restore detail missing from a low-resolution source image, so check both the design and the images placed in it.
What “resolution” means in Canva
When people ask how to change resolution in Canva, they may mean the canvas dimensions, the pixel dimensions or quality of a downloaded image, or the resolution of a print PDF. These are separate controls.

- Export size and quality: settings that affect the downloaded JPG or PNG.
- Print resolution: Canva lists PDF Standard at 96 dpi and PDF Print at 300 dpi.
Changing a canvas from 800 × 800 pixels to 1600 × 1600 pixels gives the design more output pixels, but does not create genuine detail in an 800-pixel photograph placed inside it. Canva’s blurry-download guidance says designs below 500 × 500 px are likely to look blurry and recommends high-resolution source photos, around 300 DPI where possible. Those figures are Canva Help Center guidance, not a guarantee of print quality.
How to change the dimensions of an existing Canva design
- Log in to Canva and open the design.
- Select Resize.
- Choose a suggested size or Custom size.
- Enter the desired width and height, then select the correct unit.
- Choose Copy & resize or Resize this design.
- Review the layout before downloading; resizing can alter text wrapping, image crops, margins, alignment, and element overlap.
Canva also documents a page-level resize route through the selected page’s Edit panel. Labels and available controls can vary by account, design, and editor surface. Check the new layout carefully, especially if you resize the original design.
How to enter custom dimensions
Use pixels when a website, social platform, presentation system, or other digital destination specifies exact pixel dimensions. Canva’s stated custom resize limits are 40 × 40 px minimum and 8000 × 3125 px maximum, according to the Canva Help Center. These are Canva design limits, not universal image-resolution standards.

- Website banner: use the exact width and height requested by the site or content system
Do not choose a larger canvas merely because it sounds higher quality; use the dimensions required for the final destination.
How to prepare a Canva design for print
Canva lists PDF Print at 300 dpi and PDF Standard at 96 dpi in its Help Center guidance on download file types. For a print job, confirm the physical size, bleed, color, and file requirements with the printer, and proof the design before ordering.
Canva’s print guidance specifies 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) of bleed on each side for products that are trimmed or cut, with exceptions for products not printed to the edge. Use bleed and crop marks when the printer requires them. The printer’s specifications take precedence.

How to download a higher-quality Canva file
- Open the design and select Share.
- Select Download.
- Choose the required file type.
- For JPG or PNG, adjust the available Size and Quality controls if shown. Options vary by format and plan.
- For print, consider PDF Print and use any required bleed or crop-mark options.
- Download the file and inspect it at its intended use size.
Which format should you choose?

A larger JPG or PNG export produces more pixels, but it cannot recreate photographic detail that was never in the source. If a size or quality control is not shown, it may not be available for that format or account.
How to fix a blurry image in Canva
If the whole design looks blurry, determine whether the problem is the canvas or an individual image.
- Select the photo or graphic inside the design.
- Check whether it is displayed larger than its original pixel dimensions.
- Replace it with the highest-resolution original available.
- Reduce its displayed size if replacement is impossible.
- Download using appropriate settings and inspect the result at its intended size.
A higher-resolution export cannot recover detail absent from a low-resolution source. Enlarging a screenshot will not reliably make tiny text readable, and may emphasize compression artifacts. For logos, use the original vector file or a higher-resolution source when available.

What to do if Resize is missing
Resize availability and controls can vary by plan, account, design, and editor. Check Canva’s current plan information before relying on a particular resize option.
If Resize is unavailable, make a custom-size design and transfer the content:
- Select Create a design.
- Choose Custom size and enter the target width, height, and unit.
- Create the new design.
- Copy and paste elements from the original design.
- Rebuild the layout, checking crops, spacing, text, and safe areas.
On mobile, look for Resize or a more-options menu; labels and availability may differ. Download through Share → Download and choose the options shown in the app.

Best resolution approach by use case

Canva resolution problems: quick diagnosis
- The canvas changed, but the photo is still blurry: the source image may not have enough pixels. Replace it or reduce its displayed size.
- The JPG looks poor: JPG compression may reduce detail. Adjust available quality settings or try PNG.
- The design changed after resizing: recheck text wrapping, crops, margins, alignment, overlaps, and small logos.
- The print shop rejected the file: confirm physical size, bleed, color, PDF requirements, and source-image quality.
- You cannot find a DPI box: use Canva’s design dimensions and export settings, and choose the appropriate PDF option for print or digital sharing.
FAQ
Can I set a specific DPI in Canva?
Canva’s controls are based on design dimensions and download options rather than a universal manual DPI field. For print, Canva lists PDF Print at 300 dpi and PDF Standard at 96 dpi.
Why is my Canva download blurry?
The design may be too small or an image in it may be low resolution or enlarged beyond its original dimensions. Canva’s Help Center says designs below 500 × 500 px are likely to look blurry; use a higher-resolution source and inspect the download at its intended size.
Does increasing the export size improve image detail?
