To protect a Photoshop layer, select it in the Layers panel and choose the lock that matches what you want to prevent: Lock Position stops movement, Lock Image Pixels prevents direct painting edits, Lock Transparent Pixels keeps edits inside existing opaque artwork, and Lock All provides the broadest protection. These controls protect a layer without flattening or merging your document.
The steps below are for Photoshop desktop. Photoshop on the web and iPad have different interfaces, so the desktop panel labels and locations may not apply there.
What a layer lock does
Locking is a protection control, not a visibility setting. A locked layer remains in the document, can still be selected in the Layers panel, and can still appear in the composition and exports. The effect depends on which lock is enabled: a position lock is narrower than Lock All. Locking also does not merge or flatten layers, so the document retains its separate components. Adobe’s layer overview describes layers as separate parts of a document that can be edited independently.

A layer lock is not file security or a backup. It helps prevent accidental operations in Photoshop; it does not stop someone with access to the document from changing its settings or working around the protection.
Find the lock controls
- Open your Photoshop document.
- If the Layers panel is not visible, choose Window > Layers.
- Select the layer or group you want to protect.
- Use the lock controls near the top of the Layers panel. The available controls can vary with the selected layer type and Photoshop interface.
Adobe’s Layers panel instructions cover opening and working with the panel. Adobe’s layer-locking guide documents the desktop lock options; its detailed page was updated May 27, 2024. Icon placement and appearance can vary by version, workspace, operating system, and edition.
Choose the right lock
| Control | What it protects | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Lock Transparent Pixels | Prevents edits from appearing in transparent areas. | You want to recolor, shade, or texture existing artwork without painting beyond its silhouette. |
| Lock Image Pixels | Prevents direct painting-based edits to the layer’s pixels. | The artwork should stay visually unchanged, but you may still need to position the layer. |
| Lock Position | Prevents the layer’s pixels from being moved. | The placement is right, but painting or other pixel edits may continue. |
| Lock All | Locks all available layer properties. | The layer is finished or approved and should be broadly protected from ordinary accidental edits. |
These are distinct protections, not degrees of one universal read-only switch. In particular, Lock Transparent Pixels preserves transparent regions, not the colors or details of opaque pixels. Lock Position prevents movement, but does not by itself prevent painting, opacity changes, or mask editing. Apply more than one partial lock when the layer needs more than one kind of protection.
Fully lock one layer
- Select the target layer or group in the Layers panel.
- Click Lock All in the lock controls.
- Look for the lock indicator beside the layer name. Adobe describes a fully locked layer as showing a solid lock icon and a partially locked layer as showing a hollow one, although the icon may look different in another interface or theme.
This is useful for approved artwork, a finished background, or a placed reference that should not be changed accidentally. If you still need to paint or move an item, use the narrower lock that protects only what is already correct.

Use partial locks while painting
Keep recoloring inside an existing silhouette
Select the layer and enable Lock Transparent Pixels. Brush strokes will affect existing opaque pixels rather than filling transparent areas. For example, you can change the color of a painted shape without extending its edges. This option is also known as the modern equivalent of the older Preserve Transparency behavior. It does not stop you from repainting details within the shape.
Protect painted pixels but keep arranging the composition
Enable Lock Image Pixels when the main risk is an accidental brush, eraser, or similar pixel edit. The layer can still be useful in the composition, including for positioning if no position lock is enabled. This is pixel-editing protection, not a guarantee that every operation on the layer is blocked.
Keep a layer in place while continuing to edit it
Enable Lock Position for a correctly aligned logo, frame, watermark, or background element that you may still need to paint or adjust. If painting should also be blocked, add Lock Image Pixels; if the layer should be broadly protected, use Lock All.
Lock several layers or a group
Apply a lock to selected layers
- In the Layers panel, Shift-click to select a contiguous range of layers.
- To select separate layers, Ctrl-click on Windows or Command-click on macOS.
- Apply the needed lock control to the selection.
These selection gestures are documented in Adobe’s layer-selection instructions. If your canvas selection seems to change unexpectedly, check whether the Move tool’s Auto Select option is selecting a different layer or group than the one you intended.

Protect a group
Select the group and use its lock controls, or use Lock Layers and Lock All Layers In Group from the Layers menu or panel menu where available. Group locking is useful for a finished logo assembly or a set of background elements. A group lock and locks on its child layers are different levels of control; if one child is particularly important, lock it individually as well and give it a clear name. When a child layer cannot be edited, inspect its parent groups for an active lock.
Unlock a layer
- Select the layer in the Layers panel.
- Click the active lock control again to turn it off. If multiple partial locks are active, disable the one that blocks the operation you need.
- Try the edit again. If it still fails, check the layer type, selected thumbnail, and any parent-group locks.
A Background layer may start locked. Select it and use its lock or conversion control in the Layers panel to make it a regular layer when needed. Converting it changes its special Background behavior, including how transparency and stacking work. The exact control can vary by interface; Adobe’s layer overview explains the Background layer and other layer types.
Common layer-lock situations
Background artwork
If a background is aligned and should not shift, use Lock Position. If it is finished and should not be altered, use Lock All. An initially locked Background layer is a separate case: unlock or convert it if you need the behavior of a regular layer.
Illustration recoloring
On a pixel layer with transparent areas, Lock Transparent Pixels can keep recoloring or shading within the current silhouette. If the goal is instead to hide or reveal parts of the illustration, use a layer mask.

Placed logo or design element
Lock Position protects precise placement while leaving pixel edits possible. If the logo is approved and should be broadly protected, Lock All is more suitable. If several elements need to move together during layout, group or link them rather than treating a lock as a way to preserve their relationship.
Text and shape layers
Type and shape layers do not necessarily expose the same lock behavior as ordinary pixel layers. Adobe notes that Lock Transparency and Lock Image are selected by default for type and shape layers and cannot be deselected in the same way as for ordinary pixel layers. Edit text through its type layer, and avoid rasterizing a unique original just to work around a layer-type restriction.

These tools solve different problems. Choose based on the change you want to prevent or enable:
| Need | Better tool |
|---|---|
| Prevent accidental movement | Lock Position |
| Prevent direct painting edits | Lock Image Pixels |
| Keep edits within existing opaque artwork | Lock Transparent Pixels |
| Broadly protect a finished layer | Lock All |
| Move or transform elements together repeatedly | Link the layers or put them in a group |
| Hide or reveal part of an image non-destructively | Layer mask |
| Preserve source content through transforms and supported filters | Smart Object |
Linked layers retain their relationship until unlinked, unlike layers that are merely selected together. See Adobe’s instructions for linking and unlinking layers. A group organizes layers; it is not itself the same thing as a lock.

A mask controls which parts of a layer are visible; a lock does not hide or reveal artwork. Photoshop’s layer-mask guide explains how masks reveal or hide an entire layer, a selection, or a manually painted region. If you are changing visibility, choose a mask rather than trying to use a lock as a substitute.
A Smart Object preserves source content for non-destructive operations such as scaling, warping, and filter application, while a lock prevents selected classes of direct edits. They can be used together: the Smart Object supports source preservation, and the lock helps avoid accidental changes in the document.
Troubleshoot an edit that will not work
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Brush will not paint | Image pixels are locked, a different layer is selected, or the mask thumbnail is active. | Select the intended layer and its image thumbnail; disable the pixel lock if painting should be allowed. |
| Layer will not move | Position is locked, a parent group is locked, or a different layer was selected. | Check the layer and its parent groups in the Layers panel, then disable the relevant position lock. |
| Painting appears only inside the existing artwork | Transparent pixels are locked. | Disable that lock if you need to paint into transparent areas. |
| Background cannot be edited normally | It is a locked Background layer. | Unlock or convert it using the Layers panel workflow. |
| Text cannot be painted on directly | The selected layer is a type layer. | Edit the text as text, or use a separate pixel layer for painting when appropriate. |
| A filter command is unavailable | The selected layer type or thumbnail may not support that operation. | Select the image thumbnail and use a compatible workflow for the layer type; preserve an original before converting or rasterizing. |
| The mask changes instead of the artwork | The mask thumbnail is selected. | Click the image thumbnail to target the layer pixels, or select the mask deliberately to edit visibility. |
| A layer moves unexpectedly | The wrong layer or group may be selected, including through canvas-based Auto Select. | Select the intended item in the Layers panel and review Auto Select in the Move tool options. |
| A lock indicator looks hollow or unexpected | A partial lock may be active, or a parent group may affect the layer. | Inspect both the selected layer’s controls and its containing groups. |
Adobe documents separate mask and image thumbnails because masks can be edited independently. Its guides cover adding and editing layer masks and applying or deleting them.
Artboards have a separate position lock
An artboard’s Lock position property is not the same as locking every layer inside it. Adobe notes that content can still be added to, moved within, or removed from a position-locked artboard. Locking an element layer, locking the artboard itself, and controlling whether elements are auto-nested are separate behaviors. See Adobe’s artboard properties guide.

Desktop, web, and iPad
The panel instructions here are for desktop Photoshop; do not assume the same icons or menu paths appear in every edition. Photoshop for iPad has a separate layer-action workflow that includes a Lock layer action, documented in Adobe’s iPad layer guide. Use the controls shown in your edition rather than relying on desktop icon placement.
Make locks easier to manage
- Use descriptive names so it is clear what is protected.
- Lock only the property that is already correct while a project is active; reserve Lock All for finished or approved work.
- Use groups to organize related elements, and check parent groups when a child layer behaves as if locked.
- Keep an unlocked working copy or save versioned files when changes would be costly to recreate. A layer lock is not a backup.
- Avoid rasterizing a unique text or vector source just to make a direct pixel edit; use a duplicate if rasterization is necessary for a particular workflow.
For keyboard shortcuts, use the Layers panel and its menus unless you have confirmed a shortcut in your own Photoshop setup. Adobe supports customizable shortcuts; its shortcut customization information and default shortcut reference do not make a universal lock shortcut safe to assume across versions and platforms.
