Conventional vinyl records are pressed, not cast. If you want to make one playable record at home, the practical route is to cut or emboss a groove into a purpose-made blank with a compatible record-cutting lathe. That creates a lathe-cut disc—not a home-pressed copy made with a stamper.
What “casting a record” means—and why the wording matters
In standard record manufacturing, heated PVC is formed under pressure between stampers. The stamper is a metal part made through earlier master-cutting and electroplating stages. The documented conventional process is pressing; the sources here do not describe pouring molten PVC into a home mold as the normal way to make a playable record.

For a one-off disc, the relevant alternative is lathe cutting or embossing: audio is transferred to a blank as a groove. Although both approaches make a disc that can be played, cutting a blank is not the same process as pressing copies from stampers.

Home cutting and industrial pressing compared
| Approach | What it makes | Core equipment and materials | Typical scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lathe cutting or embossing | An individual disc or small batch with grooves cut or embossed into blanks. | A compatible cutting lathe and cutter system, blank, and stylus. Parts must match the particular machine and method. | One-off or small-batch work. |
| Conventional pressing | Repeated copies formed between stampers. | Audio preparation, a lacquer-cut master, electroplated metal parts and stampers, plus a press and heating and cooling infrastructure. | Plant-style production; the sources do not establish a minimum viable run size. |
The available sources establish this process distinction, but not a controlled sound-quality comparison. They do not support a general claim that one route always sounds better.
How a pressed record is made
- Prepare the audio for vinyl. The material is adapted for the physical limits of a record before mastering.
- Cut a lacquer master. A specialized record lathe cuts the audio groove into a lacquer disc.
- Make metal parts and stampers. The lacquer is electroplated to create metal parts, from which stampers are prepared.
- Form the record. At the press, heated PVC is shaped between the stampers.
- Cool, trim, and check. The disc is cooled and trimmed; test pressings and quality checks help identify production problems.
The equipment described in manufacturing accounts is industrial, not a home recipe. Europeana describes PVC granulate heated to 160°C, a mold heated to 180°C, and 110 tonnes of pressure; it also notes that figures vary with the pressing system. Europeana’s publication date is not established in the retrieved page material. These are illustrative manufacturing figures, not safe settings for a DIY press.

The VinyLab describes its own installation as using a 30 hp boiler producing steam at 200 PSI, a 500-gallon hot/cold tank, and chilled-water supply in the press cycle. Those figures describe that facility, not universal plant specifications. The retrieved page does not establish a publication year.
What you need to investigate for the home route
Lathe-cut production uses purpose-made blanks and a compatible stylus. A specialist supplier lists blanks and diamond styli for this work, but these are not universal parts: confirm that each item suits the lathe, cutterhead, and cutting method. A beginner guide discusses cutterheads, styli, mastering, and setup; a practitioner-oriented Vinyl Factory feature covers checks such as cutter-head position and stylus angle. Individual machines may require different setup.

- Identify the cutting lathe and cutterhead before choosing a stylus or blank.
- Check the manufacturer or supplier’s compatibility guidance for the exact components and cutting method.
- Use machine-specific setup instructions rather than assuming a position or angle applies to every lathe.
The cited material does not establish a safe, complete DIY construction plan for a press or cutter. Do not treat industrial PVC temperatures and pressures as instructions for improvised home pressing.

Which route fits your goal?
- One playable disc: look into lathe cutting or embossing and a compatible blank-and-stylus setup.
- Repeated copies: conventional pressing requires the preceding master and electroplating stages as well as stampers and press infrastructure; it is not simply a larger home cutting setup.
- Learning the commercial process: a vinyl manufacturing field guide is an educational resource for understanding a pressing run.
