To make a fishtail friendship bracelet, arrange eight working strands in mirrored colors, then bring the outer strand from each side into the center, alternating left and right. Repeat until the braid fits, knot the end, and leave enough thread to tie it on.
What you need
- Embroidery floss, thin cord, or thin string in colors that are easy to distinguish. Embroidery floss is a direct option in tutorials from Marching North and Halifax Public Libraries; Marching North also gives 1 mm hemp cord as an option.
- Scissors.
- A way to hold the work steady: a safety pin and cushion, or tape and a tabletop.
No loom is needed for this braid.
Choose the strand length and set up
Tutorials use different starting lengths, so treat these as examples rather than a universal wrist measurement: The Salvation Army UK’s June 2020 instructions use four 40 cm strands, while Marching North’s tutorial specifies four 46-inch pieces of 1 mm hemp cord or embroidery floss. The amount needed depends on the wrist and how much length the braid consumes. Leave generous tails, and check the growing bracelet against the intended wrist before finishing.
- Cut four strands. For a loop closure, fold them in half and knot the folded end, leaving a loop. Pin the loop to a cushion. This follows The Salvation Army UK’s method.
- Alternatively, tie the strands together near one end and tape that short end to a tabletop, as described by Marching North.
- Spread the eight working ends out. Arrange the colors as mirror images from left to right, keeping the center easy to see. For example, if the left side reads red, blue, green, yellow moving inward, arrange the right side in the reverse order moving outward. Your color choices determine the design.
Braid the fishtail
- Take the outermost strand on the left and carry it across the other strands on that side into the center.
- Take the outermost strand on the right and carry it across the strands on that side into the center. Cross it over the strand just moved from the left.
- Repeat those two movements, alternating left and right. Keep the strands in order and use even tension so the braid stays consistent.
- Pause as needed to check the length against the intended wrist. Stop when the braided section reaches the desired fit.
The defining motion is bringing the outside strands to the center in alternating order. This is a braid technique, not a knotted chevron pattern.

Finish and tie the bracelet
- Tie a firm knot at the end of the braided section.
- Leave enough unbraided tail to tie the bracelet comfortably around the wrist.
- Trim excess thread without cutting into the knot or wearable tails. If you made a starting loop, pass the tails through it for a simple tie closure.
