A quilt design wall is a vertical, fabric-covered surface for arranging and rearranging blocks before sewing. For the quickest setup, hang flannel or batting; for a firmer, portable surface, cover a lightweight panel; if you need to store it between projects, use a flannel-backed tablecloth that can roll up. Start by measuring the available area and the largest quilt layout you want to plan.

Choose a design-wall style and size
Pick the option that fits your space and how you work. Flannel and batting have a soft, slightly napped surface that helps fabric pieces stay in place. A board backing makes the surface firmer, while a cloth-only option is easier to put away.

| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging flannel or batting | A quick setup with little construction | May be less taut and firm than a backed panel |
| Board covered with flannel or batting | A stable surface or a panel you can move | Needs a backing and a way to support or hang it |
| Flannel-backed tablecloth | Storage and transport | Less rigid than a board-backed surface |
Measure the wall or floor area you can dedicate to planning, then check that it can hold the largest arrangement you need. A tutorial suggests 60 by 72 inches as a useful size, but that is one maker’s recommendation, not a standard; adapt the dimensions to your room and projects. A Canadian Quilters Association example uses a 6-by-6-foot panel.
Make a simple hanging flannel or batting wall
- Measure the space. Decide the finished width and height based on the available wall and the quilt layouts you plan to arrange.
- Choose a neutral face. White, beige, or cream flannel or batting provides a subdued background. Cut it to size, allowing enough extra material to attach it securely.
- Hang it securely. Depending on the wall and material, use suitable magnets, removable strips, or push pins. Check the surface and attachment method before loading it with blocks.
- Arrange the pieces. Place the blocks or fabric pieces against the napped face, then move them around until the layout works for you.
A flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth is another quick-use surface: hang it with the flannel side facing outward. The vinyl backing protects the cloth when it is rolled for storage.

Make a rigid, portable design-wall panel
A board-backed wall is useful when you want a surface that holds its shape or can be moved. Choose a backing that suits the finished size and how often you will handle it. One DIY build uses thick cardboard, polyester batting, and a flannelette sheet; its author recommends a sturdier backing than cardboard if the panel will be removed and reused.
- Cut the backing to size. Use a suitable rigid panel. If you plan to move it often, prioritize a backing more durable than ordinary cardboard.
- Cover the face. Lay batting, flannel, or both over the panel. A neutral outer layer makes it easier to see the fabrics and blocks.
- Pull the layers taut. Wrap the material around the edges and secure it on the back with an attachment method appropriate to the backing. The cited DIY example uses duct tape.
- Choose how to use it. Keep a manageable panel portable, or mount a larger one to the wall using hardware suited to the panel’s weight and your wall construction.
For a larger wall-mounted example, the Canadian Quilters Association describes joining three 1-inch foam insulation boards into a 6-by-6-foot panel, adding wooden strapping, pinning flannel over the front, and hanging the panel from wall-mounted strapping. The guide lists 4 yards of flannel for that build. It advises keeping the top strapping straight and checking for outlets and switches before mounting.

Mounting examples are not load ratings. Select fasteners for the actual panel and wall, and locate outlets or switches before drilling. A lighter DIY board may use hook-and-loop strips, but that example does not establish a universal safe weight.
Make a rollable design wall
If you do not want a permanent wall installation, use a flannel-backed tablecloth as a temporary surface. The flannel face holds the pieces; the vinyl side protects the fabric when you roll it up. You can hang it while planning, then store or transport it rolled. Another DIY example attaches a rollable surface to storage-unit framing, which can work where a conventional wall is unavailable.

Choose the fabric surface and test it
Flannel, batting, and flannelette are all used as design-wall faces. Their ability to hold pieces can vary with the material and project, so try a small area with your blocks before committing to a full build. In a 40-minute comparison test reported by the Scrap Fabric Love author, cotton batting, polyester batting, and flannelette all held blocks. That is one maker’s observation, not a controlled independent study or a universal ranking.
