For clean rotary cuts, work on a cutting mat, guide the cutter with a thick ruler, and keep your fingers clear of the blade path. Replace the blade when it begins skipping material or needs extra pressure—not on a fixed schedule. If an OLFA blade stops rotating smoothly, check for stuck-together blades and remove dust before reassembling; other brands may require different procedures.

How to cut safely and cleanly
Set the material on a flat cutting mat and guide the rotary cutter along the back of a thick ruler. OLFA’s general tool guidance cautions that a thin or sloping ruler edge can let the cutter ride up; keep your guiding hand out of the cutting line and avoid forcing the blade. OLFA’s RTY-2/G instructions likewise say to press the cutter against the material on a cutting mat and keep fingers away from the blade. These precautions reduce avoidable risks but cannot guarantee that an injury will not occur.
When you finish, use the cutter’s cover fully so the blade is covered while the tool is not in use. The exact cover mechanism depends on the model.

For a specific example, OLFA describes its RTY-2/G as a 45 mm rotary cutter for materials including fabric, paper, rubber sheets, and film. That specification is for this model, not a universal capacity for rotary cutters. See OLFA’s RTY-2/G product instructions and its general tool-use guidance.
When to replace a rotary cutter blade
There is no universal number of hours, cuts, or yards that a rotary blade should last. OLFA says blade life varies with the material, how the cutter is used, and whether an OLFA mat is used; it does not recommend changing blades after a set amount of cutting time.

Use cut quality as the cue. OLFA identifies skipped threads or larger uncut sections of fabric or paper, and having to press hard to cut, as signs that its blade needs replacing. Continuing to press harder is not a good workaround: the manufacturer’s advice is to change the blade when these symptoms appear.

OLFA does not recommend sharpening its rotary blades. It mentions an Endurance blade as an option for longer blade life, but does not provide a quantified lifespan or performance guarantee. OLFA’s FAQ covers blade wear and sharpening.

Choose a replacement blade that fits your cutter
Before buying or installing a blade, identify the cutter model and its blade size or hub design. A blade that looks similar may not fit, and replacement steps vary between models and brands.
For example, OLFA lists RB45 as a compatible replacement for its RTY-2/G 45 mm cutter and also lists an RB45H Endurance blade. Do not assume RB45 fits every cutter described as a rotary cutter; check the instructions for your particular tool. The RTY-2/G product page lists its compatible blades.

Fiskars publishes separate blade-change instructions for Standard, EasyChange, and DuoLoop designs. This is why a generic installation sequence is not reliable: identify your hub type and follow the maker’s directions for that design. Fiskars’ blade-change guide groups instructions by those hub types.
What to do if the blade is not rotating properly
OLFA’s troubleshooting advice applies to its cutters; consult the manufacturer’s instructions for another brand or model. For an OLFA cutter, check the following:

- Disassemble it as you would when changing the blade, following the model’s instructions.
- If the blades came from a multi-pack, check that two blades have not stuck together.
- Wipe dirt and dust from the blade and handle with a cloth.
- Reassemble the cutter according to its instructions, then check whether the blade rotates properly.
If the blade still does not rotate smoothly, do not improvise a repair based on another model’s design; refer to the maker’s guidance for your cutter. OLFA’s FAQ gives the brand-specific rotation troubleshooting steps.
