Lost-wax casting makes a metal object by replacing a temporary wax pattern with molten metal. The pattern is surrounded by refractory mold material; heating removes the wax and leaves a cavity that metal fills. Once the casting cools, the mold is broken away and the object is cleaned and finished. The wax is the positive model that gives the mold its shape, then disappears.
How does lost-wax casting work?
The process follows the wax pattern from model to finished metal. The exact materials and equipment vary between jewelry studios, sculpture foundries, and industrial production; these approaches are related, but their procedures are not interchangeable.
- Create the wax pattern. Carve or shape wax by hand, or make a wax replica from a mold taken from a master model. The pattern represents the object to be cast.
- Add channels. Depending on the design and casting method, channels allow wax to escape, provide routes for molten metal, and help vent air or gases.
- Build the mold. Encase the pattern in refractory material. Options documented across different traditions and applications include plaster, clay, loam, and industrial ceramic shell.
- Remove the wax. After the mold dries or is fired, it is heated so the wax melts or burns out, leaving a cavity. The mold may also be heated as required for the chosen metal and process.
- Fill and cool. Molten metal is poured into the cavity and allowed to cool sufficiently.
- Break out and finish. The mold is removed or broken away. The sprue and feeding channels are cut off, and the object may be worked, polished, chased, joined, or patinated.
The Victoria and Albert Museum’s guide to metalworking techniques describes the mold as single-use: it must be broken to release the casting. An indirect process can nevertheless preserve a master model, which can be used to make further wax patterns.
What are the main types of lost-wax casting?
Solid casting
A solid wax model is replaced by solid metal. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes this as an early, simple technique, while noting that bronze’s physical properties limited solid casting to small figures.

Hollow direct casting
A core is formed first and coated with wax before the outer mold is made. Once the wax is removed, the space between core and outer mold forms the hollow metal wall. The Musée Rodin describes this approach in its account of bronze casting.
Indirect casting
A mold taken from a master model produces wax replicas for casting. The master itself is not sacrificed, making it possible to create copies or cast separate sections.

Piece casting
For large sculptures, the work may be divided into sections that are cast separately and then joined. This is one way the method accommodates forms too large or complex to cast as one piece.
Industrial investment casting
In industrial investment casting, patterns may be injected, printed, or fabricated, then assembled on a sprue. The assembly is repeatedly dipped in ceramic slurry and coated with grit to build a shell. After dewaxing, the shell is filled with metal. The Investment Casting Institute identifies complex near-net shapes and high surface quality as benefits of the process.

Where is the technique used?
Lost-wax casting spans hand-made jewelry and sculpture as well as modern industrial manufacture. The underlying idea—replace a sacrificial pattern with metal—connects these uses, but the materials, equipment, scale, and finishing requirements differ.
A documented example of a specific living craft tradition appears in Christina Griffith’s 2019 Penn Museum account of goldsmithing in Kumasi, Ghana. It describes Asante brass weights and jewelry made with wild beeswax patterns, hand-shaped details, clay slip, a furnace and charcoal fire, mold break-out, and hand finishing. These details describe that account’s practice, not a universal recipe. The V&A guide also features a gold scorpion ring made in Kumasi in 2024.

How does lost-wax casting compare with sand casting?
| Consideration | Lost-wax casting | Sand casting |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern and mold | The wax is removed by heating, and the refractory mold is broken after casting. (V&A) | A pattern forms a cavity in sand and is removed before pouring. (V&A sand-casting description) |
| Detail and surface | The Investment Casting Institute identifies high surface quality and complex near-net shapes as benefits. (Institute PDF) | The V&A notes that a sand mold can reproduce a granular surface from the sand. |
| Mold and pattern reuse | Each mold is used once; an indirect route can reuse the master to make additional waxes. (V&A; The Met) | Not stated in the cited V&A description. |
| Choosing between them | Scale, alloy, geometry, facilities, and finishing needs affect the choice. The cited sources do not establish one method as universally better or as the right choice for every beginner. | |
What materials do you need?
Materials depend on the pattern, mold, metal, and scale. For the pattern-making stage, jewelry casting wax and wax-carving tools are directly relevant. The Penn Museum account describes heated blades, spatulas, and needles used to shape and detail wax. A complete casting setup requires more than pattern supplies: refractory investment or ceramic-shell materials, facilities for controlled burnout and handling molten metal, and equipment for finishing are also part of the broader process. Their selection depends on the specific route.
What is the history of lost-wax casting?
The sources do not support assigning lost-wax casting to one inventor or a single culture. The French Ministry of Culture’s archaeology resource says the technique was observed in ancient Greece in the sixth century BCE. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes it becoming the major method for Greek bronze statuary by the Late Archaic period, around 500–480 BCE. The documented Kumasi craft practice and contemporary 2024 ring show that the technique also belongs to living and varied making contexts, not only ancient history.
What should beginners know about safety?
Lost-wax casting involves heated molds and molten metal. The sources cited here do not provide a complete, current safety protocol, so they cannot support a home-casting procedure, operating temperatures, or claims about appropriate household equipment. Before attempting hot casting, consult current safety instructions specific to the process and work under qualified supervision.
