You can make a simple pair of tassel earrings with embroidery floss, earring hooks, jump rings, jewelry pliers and scissors. For tassels you can size yourself, wrap floss around a small piece of cardboard; for a quicker version, attach the tassels directly from a floss skein. The instructions below cover both, plus a chunkier yarn option and an optional beaded variation.

Choose a tassel-making method

The first two methods make a straightforward beginner project. The direct skein approach takes fewer preparation steps, while cardboard wrapping lets you adjust the size of the bundle before attaching it. Gather supplies for a cardboard-wrapped pair
- Embroidery floss or thread in your chosen color
- Two earring hooks or wires
- Two jump rings
- Needle-nose or jewelry pliers
- Scissors
- A small piece of cardboard
- A needle for passing a tie through the wrapped bundle
Choose the floss color and decide roughly how long and full you want the fringe. Make the first tassel as a guide, then use the same amount of thread and wrapping count for the second.

Make tassels by wrapping floss around cardboard
- Wrap the floss. Wind it around the cardboard until the bundle looks as full as you want. Gathered’s 2022 tutorial uses approximately 45 wraps as an example; that is a project-specific starting point, not a universal count. Thread thickness and the fullness you want affect how many wraps you need.
- Secure the bundle before sliding it off. Use a needle to pass a separate length of floss through the top of the wrapped bundle. Tie it firmly, then slide the bundle off the cardboard while holding the tie in place.
- Form the tassel head. Tighten the securing tie. Wrap another length of floss around the bundle just below the tied top to create the tassel’s neck, and secure the end.
- Attach a jump ring. Connect the ring through the tied loop at the top of the tassel. Open a jump ring by gripping each side with pliers and twisting the ends sideways in opposite directions; do not pull them apart. Place the loop on the ring, then twist the ends back together so they meet.
- Attach the hook. Use the jump ring to connect the tassel loop to the loop on an earring hook. Close the ring fully. Repeat the steps with the same floss amount and wrapping count for the second earring.
- Trim the fringe. Cut through the folded loops at the bottom of each tassel. Hold the earrings side by side and make small cuts until their visible lengths look balanced.
Make the quicker direct-skein version
If your embroidery floss comes in a skein with a top loop, you can use that loop as the tassel attachment point. Mary Martha Mama’s method connects a jump ring through the loop and the earring-wire loop, closes the ring with pliers, binds the tassel head with another length of floss, then trims the fringe. This saves the cardboard-wrapping step, but the skein’s shape determines the initial bundle size.
Adjust the finish or try a variation
Use cotton yarn and a metal ribbon clamp
For a chunkier tassel, Rayher’s craft idea uses cotton yarn and a metal ribbon clamp rather than a floss-wrapped head. The method calls for wire or rings, earwires, a blunt needle, cutters and pliers as well as the yarn and clamps. Follow the clamp’s construction for securing the yarn rather than treating it like the bound head in the floss methods.

Make a beaded tassel
Beaded tassels are a separate, more involved construction: seed beads or other beads are threaded with a needle and thread, then finished with caps or other jewelry findings. The tutorials from PotomacBeads and The Pink Craft Box show examples. This variation needs beadwork supplies and technique, so it is not necessary for the basic floss pair.
Fix common tassel problems
- The bundle loosens or unravels: Tighten the tie that secures the top before sliding the bundle off the card, and wrap the head binding firmly before trimming.
- The two earrings look uneven: Match the thread quantity and wrapping count, then compare the pair side by side before making small final trims.
- The jump ring does not close neatly: Twist its ends sideways rather than pulling them apart. Keeping the ring’s shape makes it easier to bring the ends back into alignment.
Choose earwires with your own material needs in mind
The cited craft instructions do not establish the metal composition of their earring findings. If you need a particular metal or have concerns about sensitivity, check the supplier’s material details before wearing the finished earrings.
