The Set Sail Beach Bag is a quilted sailboat block sewn onto the front of a purchased tote—not a pattern for making the tote itself. Make and bind the 11¼ × 12-inch block, then stitch through its binding to attach it to the bag.

What the Set Sail Beach Bag pattern makes
Published by AllPeopleQuilt on April 11, 2025, the project decorates a purchased tote with a pieced sailboat block. The page calls it a quick weekend bag. Its project maker is Doris Brunnette, and the block is inspired by Whales & Sails by designer Karla Zadnik. Yacht Club by Amanda Niederhauser for Riley Blake Designs is cited as fabric inspiration, but the listed fabrics do not require that collection.
The block finishes at 11¼ × 12 inches, including seam allowances. The instructions do not specify the tote’s dimensions, material, or closure, so choose a tote whose front can accommodate the block and whose fabric can be sewn through.

Materials and cutting sizes
The pattern’s yardages and cutting instructions assume 42 inches of usable fabric width. Gather these pieces:
- White print: one 5 × 9-inch piece
- Light-blue print: one 9 × 21-inch piece
- Flag print: one 2 × 6-inch piece
- Dark-blue stripe: one 3 × 9-inch piece
- Red print: ⅛ yard
- Backing: one 15-inch square
- Batting: one 15-inch square

How to assemble the sailboat block and bag
- Use the marked fabric squares and rectangles to piece the sail and hull, then join those sections into an 8½-inch-square sailboat unit.
- Add light-blue strips around the sailboat unit, followed by red strips, to complete the 11¼ × 12-inch block.
- Layer the block with the 15-inch-square batting and backing. Baste, quilt as desired, and bind the block with red print.
- Center the bound block on the front of the tote and pin it in place.
- Stitch in the ditch along the binding to secure the block to the tote.
Choosing a tote and fabric
Because the pattern leaves the tote dimensions and construction open, check that the bag’s front panel can hold the block and that your stitching can pass through the panel. The named Yacht Club collection is an inspiration, not a required purchase; the materials list instead identifies fabric by type, color, and cut size.
