Microsoft Image Creator lets you turn a written description into an image and then refine the result in Microsoft Designer. The consumer experience is available through Microsoft’s Bing and Designer ecosystem, although Microsoft may change the entry point, interface, available models, credits, and button names over time. You need an internet connection and an eligible personal Microsoft account; work and school accounts using Microsoft Entra ID are not supported for Bing Image Creator.

The most reliable workflow is simple: generate the visual, choose the strongest result, correct its composition, crop or resize it for its destination, and add important text manually in Designer rather than relying on AI-generated lettering.

What Microsoft Image Creator is called now

“Microsoft Image Creator” is not always presented as one separate, permanent application. Microsoft’s consumer image-generation tools appear across Microsoft Designer, Bing Image Creator, and other Microsoft product experiences.

These are connected parts of Microsoft’s consumer creative ecosystem rather than unrelated services. You may therefore see slightly different layouts depending on whether you begin in Bing or Designer, which device and browser you use, your region, your language, and the current rollout. Use the current official interface instead of relying on screenshots from an older tutorial.

What you need before you start

  • A personal Microsoft account. Bing says Image Creator is free for people signed in with a personal Microsoft Account. A work or school account using Microsoft Entra ID may not work.
  • An internet connection. Generation and Designer’s cloud-based editing features run online.
  • A supported browser, device, language, and region. Microsoft does not provide one universal availability matrix for every feature, so access can vary.
  • Permission to use anything you upload. Do not upload confidential documents, private client material, sensitive photographs, or images you do not have permission to edit.

Microsoft currently describes Designer as free with a monthly allowance of credits for creating and editing. That does not mean unlimited generation. Credits, speeds, model choices, and limits can change, so check the allowance displayed in your account rather than trusting an old article that promises a fixed number of boosts or generations.

How to generate an image with Microsoft Image Creator

  1. Open the current Image Creator experience. Start from Microsoft Designer’s image-creation experience or Bing Image Creator. Microsoft may move the feature or rename a button, so look for an option such as Create an image, Image Creator, or an image-generation field.
  2. Sign in with your personal Microsoft account. If you are signed in with a work or school account, switch to an eligible personal account where appropriate.
  3. Describe the image. Enter a prompt that specifies the subject, setting, composition, visual style, lighting, colors, and intended use.
  4. Submit the prompt. The service will create one or more design options, depending on the current interface and your available allowance.
  5. Compare the results. Look closely at hands, faces, small objects, edges, shadows, and any lettering before choosing an image.
  6. Continue in Designer or save the result. Depending on the interface, you can select, download, copy, share, or refine the image in Designer. Microsoft describes these as part of the normal generation workflow in its Designer welcome documentation.

Generation is only the first stage. Treat the first result as a draft, not as a finished illustration. A good image with the wrong crop, unreadable text, or distracting background may need more editing than a simpler result.

A prompt formula that produces more usable images

Instead of writing only “a dog in the rain,” build the prompt from several ingredients:

  1. Subject: what should appear?
  2. Action or pose: what is it doing, and how is it positioned?
  3. Setting: where and when is the scene taking place?
  4. Composition: close-up, portrait, wide shot, overhead view, centered subject, or negative space for a title?
  5. Visual direction: watercolor, editorial illustration, cinematic still, paper collage, product-photo style, or another broad direction.
  6. Lighting and color: soft window light, dramatic rim light, warm neutrals, or saturated complementary colors.
  7. Purpose and orientation: phone wallpaper, greeting card, invitation, social graphic, thumbnail, or concept art.

Prompt template:

[Subject] [action or pose] in [setting], [composition], [visual style], [lighting], [color palette], designed for [purpose and orientation].

Example: “A cozy golden retriever reading beside a rainy window, warm lamplight, soft watercolor illustration, rich blue and amber palette, vertical composition with empty space at the top for a title.”

How to improve a weak result

Change one or two variables at a time. If the subject is right but the framing is wrong, revise the viewpoint or composition instead of rewriting the entire prompt. For example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “Move the camera to a wide three-quarter view.”
  • “Use a close-up portrait with the subject centered.”
  • “Place the subject on the right and leave clean negative space on the left for text.”
  • “Show one person only, with both hands visible.”
  • “Use a simple uncluttered background and soft natural light.”

This makes it easier to identify which instruction improved or damaged the image. AI image tools can misinterpret precise details, so inspect every important element rather than assuming the prompt was followed perfectly.

How to edit a generated or existing image in Microsoft Designer

Designer can be used with an image you generated or with an existing photograph. Microsoft’s editing tools include cropping, rotation, adjustments, filters, adding text, background removal and blur, object erasing, color pop, focus, cutout, and other object-level operations. You can also open an image from Microsoft Photos in Designer for online editing; generative AI features require signing in with a Microsoft account. See Microsoft’s image-editing guidance for the current interface.

  1. Select or upload the image. Choose the generated result or bring in a photograph you have permission to edit.
  2. Remove distractions. Erase unwanted objects, blur a background, or remove the background entirely.
  3. Choose the destination size. Crop and resize for a phone wallpaper, social post, card, invitation, thumbnail, or other use.
  4. Make restrained adjustments. Correct brightness, contrast, color, focus, or other visual problems without over-processing the image.
  5. Add design elements. Insert a title, caption, border, sticker, logo you are authorized to use, or other layout elements.
  6. Inspect the image at full size. Check faces, hands, small text, logos, hair, transparent areas, and object edges.
  7. Download or share the finished design. Keep the original generated file as well as the edited version if you may need to revise the project later.

Add important text after generating the image

AI-generated lettering can be inconsistent, misspelled, or visually distorted. For a birthday card, poster, invitation, social graphic, or thumbnail, use Image Creator to make the background or illustration, then add the essential wording with Designer’s text tools. This gives you control over spelling, hierarchy, alignment, contrast, and the final reading experience.

A practical layout method is to ask for negative space in the prompt: “subject on the right, uncluttered pale background on the left for a headline.” Then add the headline manually and check that it remains readable on a phone screen.

Projects you can make with the free workflow

Greeting cards and invitations

Generate a decorative background or illustration, leaving intentional empty space for the message. Add the date, location, names, and other essential information in Designer. Proofread the final design before downloading or sharing.

Social-media graphics

Specify the platform or intended orientation in your prompt, then use Designer’s crop and resize tools to fit the final canvas. Keep the focal subject large enough to survive small-screen viewing, and add captions or calls to action manually.

Phone and desktop wallpapers

Tell Image Creator whether you want a vertical or wide composition. Ask for a relatively uncluttered area where icons or desktop shortcuts will sit. Check the crop on the actual device rather than judging only from the editor preview.

Stickers, avatars, and simple illustrations

Request a clear subject, bold silhouette, and simple background. Background removal or cutout tools can help isolate the subject, but inspect the outline around hair, fingers, thin objects, and transparent areas.

Mood boards and early concepts

Use several prompts to explore color palettes, environments, costumes, materials, or composition ideas. These drafts can help communicate an artistic direction before you create a finished painting or illustration. Do not treat concept images as proof that a particular character, logo, product, or brand is legally available to use.

Photo cleanup

Designer can be useful for removing an unwanted object, blurring a background, cropping a photograph, enhancing an image, or isolating a subject. Keep an unedited copy, especially when working with a personal photograph.

How to troubleshoot common problems

The Image Creator or Designer option is missing

  • Confirm that you are connected to the internet.
  • Make sure you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account where the feature requires one.
  • Check that you opened a single image when using a Photos-to-Designer workflow; Microsoft’s support guidance lists this as a condition for the Designer option.
  • Try a supported browser, language, or device.
  • Consider regional availability and staged feature rollouts.
  • Refresh the page or use the current official Designer or Bing entry point rather than an old bookmarked URL.

A work or school account does not work

Bing’s documentation says Image Creator is not available to users signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID account. If you are permitted to use the consumer service, sign in with an eligible personal Microsoft account instead. Do not upload workplace material to a personal service without authorization.

The image is close, but the composition is unusable

Revise the camera angle, viewpoint, subject count, spacing, and lighting. Try instructions such as “wide shot,” “centered subject,” “one subject only,” or “empty space at the top.” After generation, use Designer’s crop, erase, background, and adjustment tools to correct smaller issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The text is misspelled or distorted

Do not keep regenerating an entire poster just to fix a word. Generate the visual background without essential lettering, then add the wording in Designer’s editor. Review names, dates, URLs, prices, and other high-consequence details character by character.

The result is too small or soft

Use Designer’s enhancement or upscaling-related capability where it is available, then inspect the resulting file at its intended display size. Enhancement may improve apparent clarity, but it cannot reliably reconstruct every missing fine detail. For professional print work, confirm the required dimensions and resolution with the printer before committing to the file.

The prompt or image is blocked

Simplify the request and remove material that could involve illegal content, targeted harassment, non-consensual sexual imagery, impersonation, protected rights, or other safety concerns. Microsoft says prompts and supplied images used with Designer’s generative editing features are subject to abuse monitoring and content-safety controls designed to prevent harmful, offensive, or inappropriate generation.

Free access, privacy, and safety

The basic consumer experience is free within Microsoft’s current allowance, but “free” should not be read as unlimited or permanently unchanged. Microsoft’s product pages currently describe monthly credits for Designer creation and editing. The number of credits, the speed of generations, the available models, and the features exposed to an account may change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft says prompts and supplied images used with Designer’s generative editing features undergo abuse monitoring through internal safety systems. Its documentation also explains that prompt and response data may be collected to operate, support, and improve the service under Microsoft’s privacy materials. Before uploading an image, ask:

  • Do I have permission to use and process this image?
  • Does it contain private information, faces, documents, addresses, or confidential work?
  • Would I be comfortable with the material being handled by an online service?
  • Do the current Microsoft privacy and service terms permit my intended use?

Microsoft also says AI-generated or AI-edited images use content credentials based on the C2PA standard to help identify their provenance. Treat this as a provenance aid, not a guarantee that every social network, editor, or download path will preserve the metadata.

Commercial use: read the current terms first

This is the qualification many quick tutorials omit. Microsoft’s current Designer FAQ describes the free consumer Designer experience as licensed for personal, non-commercial use with a Microsoft account. Bing Image Creator has separate terms describing Microsoft’s rights to operate the service and use prompts, creations, customizations, and related content in connection with its services.

Therefore, do not assume that every free output is automatically cleared for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Paid advertising or marketing campaigns.
  • Client work.
  • Book covers or monetized publishing.
  • Merchandise and print-on-demand products.
  • Trademarks, logos, or exclusive brand assets.

Before using an image commercially, read the current terms for the exact Microsoft product, account type, region, and plan you used. Also perform an independent rights review for recognizable people, brands, characters, logos, protected designs, locations, and source images. Microsoft does not guarantee copyright protection, exclusivity, trademark availability, or commercial clearance for every generated image.

A final quality-control checklist

  • Is the subject correct and clearly visible?
  • Are faces, hands, limbs, reflections, and object edges believable?
  • Is every manually added word spelled correctly?
  • Does the crop match the destination platform or device?
  • Is the contrast strong enough for text and accessibility?
  • Have you removed accidental logos, signatures, or unwanted marks?
  • Do you have permission to use every uploaded source image?
  • Have you checked Microsoft’s current terms if the project is commercial?
  • Did you save an original and a final edited copy?

Optional next step: organizing a growing collection

A few generated images need no special file-management system, but larger projects can quickly produce multiple prompts, drafts, exports, and edited versions. Use descriptive filenames such as rainy-window-dog_v3_social-square.png, keep source and final files in separate folders, and back up designs you may need later. Storage is optional for this browser-based workflow; it is not a requirement for creating an image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Microsoft Image Creator really free?

Microsoft currently presents Bing Image Creator as free for eligible users with a personal Microsoft account and Designer as free with a monthly allowance of credits. The service is not necessarily unlimited, and credits, speeds, models, and features can change.

Can I use a school or work Microsoft account?

Bing’s official documentation says Image Creator is not available to users signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID account, which commonly means a work or school account. An eligible personal Microsoft account may be required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Microsoft Image Creator add accurate words to an image?

It may generate lettering, but important text can be misspelled or distorted. For invitations, cards, posters, and social graphics, generate the visual first and add essential wording manually in Microsoft Designer.

Can I sell images made with Microsoft Image Creator?

Do not assume so. Microsoft’s current Designer FAQ describes the free consumer experience as personal, non-commercial. Check the current terms for the exact product, account, region, and plan before using an image in advertising, client work, merchandise, publishing, or another paid project.

Can I edit my own photos in Microsoft Designer?

Yes, Designer can work with uploaded images and includes tools such as crop, rotation, adjustments, filters, background removal or blur, object erasing, and text. Upload only material you have permission to process and avoid confidential or sensitive files.

The Bottom Line

For the best results, use Microsoft Image Creator for the first visual idea and Microsoft Designer for the finishing work. Write prompts that describe both the subject and the composition, iterate one change at a time, add important text manually, inspect the image at full size, and check Microsoft’s current terms before using the result beyond personal, non-commercial projects.
