What Krita is best at
Krita is designed as a digital-painting and illustration environment rather than a general photo editor. Its documentation covers digital painting, concept art, textures, comics, and animation. It is the better long-term choice when you want control over the entire brush-and-layer workflow.
Brushes and drawing control
Krita’s features page describes more than 100 preloaded brushes, more than nine brush engines, three stabilization methods, tagging, and resource-management tools. You can tune pressure response, texture, spacing, blending, particles, and other stroke behavior. That depth is valuable for painters, but it can feel intimidating when you only want a pen and an eraser.

Layers, assistants, and extensibility
Customizable workspaces, advanced layer handling, perspective and vanishing-point assistants, vector tools, Python scripting, and plugins give Krita a high ceiling. Add-ons can expand the application, but a plugin-dependent workflow is not the same as a feature available immediately after installation.
Animation and color
Krita has a dedicated animation workspace with a timeline, playback and scrubbing, onion skinning, audio support, frame organization, opacity and position tweening, adjustable frame ranges and rates, and export to video or still images. It also documents ICC color management, LittleCMS, OpenColorIO, HDR painting, and OpenEXR support. For frame-by-frame animation or technically controlled print and HDR work, Krita is the clear choice.

What MediBang Paint is best at
MediBang is a lightweight, manga-oriented application with a narrower learning path and stronger built-in cross-device services. Its desktop documentation highlights comic panels, multipage projects, screentones, backgrounds, fonts, and group projects.
Manga page production
You can slice panels across page borders, keep multiple comic pages in one project, reorder pages, and use premade tones and backgrounds. MediBang lists MDP, PNG, JPG, BMP, GIF, PSD, TIFF, and WEBP input and output on its desktop feature page. These tools make it faster to assemble a conventional manga page than building the same production system from general painting tools.

Cloud and collaboration
MediBang says cloud-saved art can be accessed on computers, tablets, and smartphones, with brushes, color palettes, and other settings synchronized through the same account. Its cloud documentation also describes group projects. Premium changes some limits, including group participation and storage benefits. Cloud operations require internet access, although MediBang says ordinary drawing can be done without Wi-Fi.
Free versus Premium
The core application is free. Premium adds storage, materials, fonts, filters, version-management benefits, and other services. The official overview displays Japan-market pricing, including a listed ¥300/month web plan for 20 GB and ¥2,480/year; App Store and Google Play prices differ, and prices can change. Krita has official Linux downloads and suits artists who keep projects as local files. MediBang’s cloud ecosystem is useful for switching devices, but important projects should also be backed up locally.
Choose MediBang for low-spec hardware
MediBang markets its desktop edition as lightweight and lists 100 MB minimum free space, with 2 GB recommended storage. Its desktop memory guidance is 4 GB for 32-bit systems and 8 GB for 64-bit systems; the Steam version lists 8 GB RAM. Krita lists 4 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB recommended. These figures are not benchmark results: canvas size, layers, brush engines, stabilization, GPU drivers, thermals, and tablet drivers can change performance substantially.

Choose MediBang for built-in collaboration
MediBang has the more explicit account-based group workflow. Krita supports scripting and plugins, but that is not equivalent to a managed real-time team workspace.

MediBang’s controls and familiar G Pen, Mapping Pen, and Watercolor presets can make a first manga page approachable. Its desktop introduction lists more than 50 brushes, while its current product page advertises 180-plus brushes and 1,000 screentones; treat those as page- or edition-specific figures rather than one universal count.
Krita is the better choice when you want to design or tune your own tools. Neither company publishes a controlled usability study, so “MediBang is easier” is a practical judgment based on its simpler positioning, not a measured learning-time claim. Tablet drivers, stylus pressure, canvas dimensions, stabilization, and personal preference affect both applications.
Files, PSD, and print preparation
Both applications advertise PSD support, but opening and saving a PSD does not guarantee perfect round-trip fidelity. Before migrating a production file, test text layers, vector content, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, blending modes, clipping or alpha-inheritance behavior, animation data, and CMYK conversion.

Krita documents PSD interoperability, SVG-based vector handling, ICC profiles, OpenColorIO, and OpenEXR. MediBang documents a PSD for Print (CMYK) export option and recommends enabling CMYK Display from Canvas Settings for color consistency. That is useful for many comic workflows, but it is narrower than Krita’s broader color-management toolset. Always confirm the printer’s required profile and export format.
Platforms and requirements
Krita’s current download information lists Windows 8.1 or later, macOS 10.15 on the current download page, Linux, and Android arm64 builds. The site lists Krita 5.3.3 and 6.0.3 as released on July 29, 2026, while the dedicated download page presents 5.3.3; check the exact release channel before installing.

Cloud safety and backups
MediBang cloud features require an account and internet access. Its FAQ warns that exceeding storage limits can affect how cloud data opens, including forced layer merging in certain over-limit situations. Keep local copies of important MDP, PSD, KRA, and exported files rather than treating cloud storage as your only archive.
A practical decision rule
- Pick Krita for advanced painting, illustration, animation, Linux, open-source software, local files, extensive brush customization, or technical color workflows.
- Pick MediBang for manga pages, ready-made tones and backgrounds, multipage projects, iPad or iPhone use, cross-device access, lightweight setup, or built-in group projects.
- Use both if MediBang’s cloud or comic-page workflow suits production while Krita handles painting, effects, animation, or color-critical finishing.
