Mandurah Bridge has two distinct mural projects beneath it: a nature-rich western abutment-wall work by sisters Mel ‘Melski’ McVee and Tash Alibegovic, and eastern pier-column artworks by Nicola Cowie and Kat Ferguson. Created during the 2024 Mandurah Arts Festival, the works pair local wildlife and plants with the area’s maritime history and visitor wayfinding.
Two mural projects, on opposite sides of the bridge
| Location and work | Artists | Visual focus |
|---|---|---|
| Western foreshore-side abutment wall; named “Ebb and Flow” in the official art-trail guide | Mel ‘Melski’ McVee and Tash Alibegovic | Native wildlife and local banksia in a nature-flow design beneath the setting summer sun |
| Eastern foreshore pier columns; listed as “Mandurah Bridge Pier Columns” | Nicola Cowie and Kat Ferguson | Native flora and marine life, local fishing history, and directional signage to Mandurah Museum |
The artists and locations are distinct: a September 2024 Mandurah Times report described McVee and Alibegovic completing the western walls while Cowie and Ferguson worked on the eastern columns. The Visit Mandurah art-trail guide lists both works and their artist credits.
What appears on the western wall?
The City of Mandurah describes the western abutment mural as depicting “the ebb and flow of nature” in the setting summer sun. Its imagery includes possums, dolphins, kangaroos, Carnaby’s cockatoos and local banksia. The City presents the work as a celebration of native species and people’s connection with the environment.

What do the eastern pier columns depict?
The column project brings together native flora and marine imagery—including a blue swimmer crab, dolphins, birds and stingrays—with references to Mandurah’s fishing history. The commission also called for directional signage to Mandurah Museum, so the columns were intended to serve as both public artwork and part of the pedestrian setting.
Why were the columns painted?
The City’s 2024 request for quote framed the eastern-column commission around several practical and cultural aims:

It placed the planned painting period within the Mandurah Arts Festival, scheduled for 6 September to 4 October 2024; a local report confirmed the work was underway in September. McVee also said, “It’s a pleasure being down in Mandurah creating a mural for this month’s exciting arts festival.”

Where the murals sit in the foreshore setting
The City’s project brief described pedestrian and cycle access across the bridge and under-bridge eastern walkways and fishing platforms connecting routes between north and south Pinjarra Road. It identified the walkway beneath the bridge as the safest and easiest walking route to Mandurah Museum. Those statements describe the project setting at the time of the brief, not present-day access or closure conditions.

The City’s Western Foreshore page gives a $53 million figure for the bridge project and a $3 million City contribution; it does not state the figures’ year or identify them as mural costs. The page also says the artwork was delivered in line with the State Government’s 1 percent public-art initiative for large infrastructure projects. That is program context, not evidence that the murals cost one percent of the bridge’s stated project value. The sources do not establish a standalone mural budget.
