Marie Rime’s *Masques* is a photographic portrait series, not a board game: its characters wear masks and costumes made from board-game pieces and other everyday materials. Coverage published in 2014 describes the work as portraits of people wearing board-game masks.
What is Marie Rime’s *Masques*?
*Masques* is a series of portraits by Swiss photographer Marie Rime. The title means “masks,” and the photographs present people transformed by constructed masks or costumes. The materials include board-game pieces, making the project an artwork rather than a game or product.

It’s Nice That’s 2 May 2014 feature described the project while Rime was approaching graduation from ECAL’s BA photography program. That is a detail about her career at the time of publication, not a current biography update.
What materials appear in the masks?
The 2014 coverage identifies everyday materials and game components, rather than a single named board game. It’s Nice That mentions board-game pieces; Fubiz’s 7 May 2014 description lists puzzles, cards, pick-up sticks and draughts among the materials used for the masks. These descriptions identify categories of objects, not which exact game or piece appears in each portrait.

- Compact Game-ready Size: each pawn stands 1 inch (25mm) tall with a 0.65 inch (16mm) base — the standard size for most board game squares and tabletop grids; Lightweight and easy for adults to handle, yet stable enough to stay upright during play
- Works for Every Game Night: suitable as replacement pieces for other classic board games; Also great for classroom math games, tokens, and tabletop RPG placeholder miniatures, scouts badge activities, and DIY board game projects

How does the series use costume and status?
It’s Nice That interprets the portraits through power: in its reading, armour and costume can amplify the status a viewer perceives in a person. This is the publication’s analysis of the images, not a documented statement of Rime’s own intention. The masks’ construction gives that reading a visual foothold: familiar, ordinary objects become part of a covering that changes how the sitter is presented.

What was reported about Rime in 2014?
It’s Nice That reported in 2014 that Rime had been shortlisted for that year’s Hyères photography festival. This records a historical selection reported at the time; it does not establish any current festival status. The same article’s ECAL detail likewise belongs to its 2014 context.
