Market bags are reusable bags for carrying groceries, farmers’ market purchases, and loose produce. Choose a sturdy shopping bag for the load you expect to carry; add washable produce bags when you want to keep loose items separate. What are market bags?
“Market bags” can mean different things, but here it refers to reusable bags for shopping at farmers’ markets or grocery stores. The term includes larger bags for carrying purchases and smaller reusable produce bags for loose fruits and vegetables.
Reusable produce bags are a distinct product category, not a particular brand or a guarantee of performance. How do you choose a reusable market bag?
Start with what you plan to carry. A bag intended for a few leafy vegetables has different needs from one expected to hold a full grocery shop or heavier purchases. Check the seller’s stated dimensions and capacity, and consider whether the bag has handles suited to carrying its expected load.
- Intended contents: Decide whether it will carry loose produce, packaged groceries, or a mix.
- Capacity and load: Compare dimensions and any stated load guidance with your typical shopping trip; don’t infer strength from appearance alone.
- Construction: Mesh allows airflow and makes contents visible; a less open fabric offers more coverage. Neither is automatically the better choice for every use.
- Closure: Check whether the bag opens and closes in a way that suits your shopping and storage needs.
- Handles and storage: Consider how it will be carried and whether it folds or stores conveniently between trips.
- Care and durability: Read washing and drying instructions, and look for specific durability information rather than relying on words such as “cotton,” “recycled,” or “upcycled.”
There is no independent durability test or lifecycle comparison established here. Reusable bags can reduce reliance on disposable bags when they are reused, but the available evidence does not establish that one material is categorically more sustainable over its full life.

Which reusable produce bags are washable?

Can you bring your own bag to the market?
In general, bringing your own reusable bags is a practical way to carry purchases, but whether a retailer charges for a bag depends on the local rules and the retailer. The UK Government’s consumer guidance says, “As a shopper, you can avoid being charged by bringing your own bags.” UK Government guidance on carrier-bag charges
Rules are jurisdiction-specific. In England, the minimum charge was raised to 10 pence on 21 May 2021 and extended to all retailers; large retailers also have reporting requirements. Defra’s latest reporting for the year from 7 April 2024 to 6 April 2025 records 437 million single-use plastic bags sold by 102 reporting retailers in England. The European Union’s framework sets a target for Member States to ensure annual consumption does not exceed 40 lightweight plastic carrier bags per person from 31 December 2025, or to set an equivalent target by weight, and/or ensure lightweight bags are not provided free at the point of sale. This is an EU-level framework, not a single identical checkout rule across every country. The Commission notes possible exceptions for very lightweight bags under 15 microns where needed for hygiene or to prevent food waste. Check the current rules where you shop. A reusable bag gives you an alternative to taking a new single-use bag for each shopping trip, especially when you remember to bring it and use it again. The policy context helps explain why shoppers encounter bag charges: the UK Government says major supermarkets distributed more than 7.6 billion carrier bags in 2014, about 140 per person in England.
