Microsoft Paint combines a canvas for manual drawing and editing with newer AI-assisted features. Microsoft documents Cocreator, Generative Fill, Sticker generator, and Object Select for Copilot+ PCs running the current Paint app. These AI tools have distinct tasks and requirements; for example, Microsoft specifies a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC for Generative Fill.
Paint’s AI workflow is hybrid: Microsoft says image generation runs locally, while account sign-in and internet access are needed for online safety services. A mouse is sufficient for drawing with Cocreator; a compatible stylus is optional.

This guide covers Microsoft Paint, not Paint 3D or Microsoft Photos. Microsoft’s Paint overview describes the app; the AI requirements and behavior below reflect Microsoft’s Paint Copilot+ feature documentation.
AI features in Paint
Microsoft documents Cocreator, Generative Fill, Sticker generator, and Object Select as distinct AI-assisted features. Its Paint documentation says these features require a Copilot+ PC and the latest Paint app from the Microsoft Store. Generative Fill has a narrower stated hardware requirement: a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC. These requirements apply to the documented AI tools, not to Paint’s conventional drawing input.

Cocreator
Enter a descriptive prompt and draw on the canvas; Paint shows generated artwork in a side pane. You can adjust a creativity slider, choose styles such as watercolor or oil painting, then apply an output to the canvas for further editing or saving. Microsoft says Cocreator works with a mouse or stylus and is optimized for English prompts; it recommends specific details in both the prompt and drawing.
Microsoft says Cocreator requires a Copilot+ PC and the latest Paint app. It also says generation runs locally, while a Microsoft account and internet connection are needed for cloud safety services. Microsoft describes those services as filtering content and collecting prompts and device and user identifiers for abuse monitoring; it says it does not store input images or generated images. These are Microsoft’s claims about the documented workflow, not a general description of all Paint processing.
Generative Fill
Select a rectangular or free-form area and describe what you want added. You can retry or revise the prompt before keeping a result. Microsoft specifies a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC for this feature, in addition to the current Paint app. Treat that as a feature-specific requirement that may change, not as a requirement for all Paint functions.

Sticker generator
From a blank canvas or an existing image, enter a short description to generate sticker options. A selected sticker can be added to the canvas, copied, or saved from the side panel.
Object Select
Choose Object Select and click an element in an image or artwork. Paint highlights the element without requiring manual tracing. Microsoft lists copying, moving, erasing, and applying Generative Fill among the actions available after selection. Inspect the selection before making a destructive edit.
Image Creator name, credits, and provenance
A separate Microsoft Support article says Cocreator was recently renamed Image Creator, with a gradual rollout of the new name. Its described workflow uses a text description and style to generate three variants, and requires a Microsoft account. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers receive 60 AI credits per month, with one credit used per generated set. Check Microsoft’s current documentation because names, rollouts, and credit policies can change.

This is Microsoft’s description of provenance information, not a claim that every image edited in Paint is marked.

Microsoft’s broader documentation for on-device Copilot+ AI components applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, 26H1, and 26H2, but that does not replace the more specific Paint feature prerequisites. A Windows-compatible stylus pen is an optional accessory; check that it works with your device. No particular model was tested or verified here.

Does Paint’s Cocreator require a stylus?
No. Microsoft says users can draw on the canvas with a mouse or stylus. A stylus is optional, and compatibility depends on the device.

Does Generative Fill work on every Copilot+ PC?
Microsoft’s current documentation specifies a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC for Generative Fill. Check current Microsoft guidance because feature requirements may change.
Does Paint send images to the cloud for Cocreator?
