Minecraft is an open-ended, block-based sandbox game about exploring, gathering resources, crafting and building. You can play alone or with others, focus on creative construction, or take on the extra demands of survival. The right edition depends mainly on your device and which edition your friends use: Java and Bedrock players cannot join each other’s multiplayer sessions.

What is Minecraft?
Minecraft gives players a world made of blocks they can break, collect and place. Those basic actions support a wide range of play: you might gather materials and build a home, explore unfamiliar areas, craft useful items, or work on a large construction project.

The game’s open-ended design lets players decide what to do and how long to pursue it. Some play for the challenge of surviving; others treat the world as a place to build and experiment.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
What are the main game modes?
Creative mode
Creative mode is centered on building. Players have broad access to resources and can fly, making it easier to plan and construct without the resource-gathering and survival pressures of the other main mode.
Survival mode
Survival mode adds the work of gathering resources and crafting, along with health, hunger and hostile encounters. It gives building a different rhythm: players need to manage their character’s needs while exploring and collecting materials.

- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
You can play either mode alone. Single-player works offline; online multiplayer is a separate choice.
Which Minecraft edition should you choose?
Start with the devices you and your friends use, then check which edition they play. “Cross-play” applies within supported edition groups; it does not mean every Minecraft player can join the same world.

On PC, Minecraft currently presents Java & Bedrock as a bundle. For other devices, check the store listing and edition before buying; do not assume that a purchase for one device covers another.
A practical decision checklist
- Playing with friends: find out whether they use Java or Bedrock, and make sure your device supports that edition.
- Playing locally: if you want console split-screen, verify the game and console setup you plan to use.
- Choosing content or servers: check whether the mods, Marketplace items or third-party servers you care about are available for your edition.
- Playing online on a console: check whether the console’s online service subscription is required.
What age is Minecraft for, and is it violent?
Minecraft’s parents’ guide gives recommended ratings of PEGI 7 and ESRB Everyone 10+. These are regional ratings, not a guarantee that the game will suit every child. Survival mode includes hostile encounters; Creative mode focuses on building and gives players broad resources and flight. Consider the child, the mode they will play and whether they will play online when deciding if it is appropriate.
Rank #4
Is Minecraft safe for kids to play online?
Solo play and online multiplayer are different experiences. Multiplayer brings interaction with other people, so a child’s account settings, device settings and understanding of whom they are playing with all matter. Minecraft says multiplayer is off by default for child accounts.

Parents can use Microsoft/Xbox family settings to manage online games, chat and purchases. The exact controls and path vary by device. Minecraft also documents player reporting and moderation; Bedrock and Realms contexts include chat filtering. These are useful tools, not a guarantee that every unwanted interaction will be prevented. Minecraft’s safety guidance says versions earlier than Java 1.16.4 lack the newer safety features described there and recommends keeping the game updated.
Best Value
- Decide whether the child should play online and review account and device settings before enabling it.
- Check how chat, purchases and online play are controlled on the specific platform.
- Talk with the child about who they play with and what to do if an interaction feels uncomfortable.
- Keep the game updated so it has the safety features available for its version.
What accessibility options does Minecraft offer?
Accessibility features vary by game and edition, so check the in-game Accessibility menu on the device the player will use. Minecraft describes options across its games that include menu navigation and narration, along with settings for how chat text is presented.
Bedrock also has adjustable audio channels and ore patterns designed to be easier to distinguish for players who have difficulty reading color differences. These options can help, but availability depends on the particular game and edition.
What do Minecraft purchases include?
The base game is the direct purchase for playing Minecraft. On PC, Java and Bedrock are currently presented together as a bundle; for consoles and mobile devices, check the relevant store listing for the edition and device coverage before buying.
Bedrock’s Marketplace offers optional content such as maps, skins and add-ons. Realms are optional hosted worlds, not a requirement for ordinary single-player play. Availability and store details can change, so verify the current listing for your platform rather than assuming that Marketplace content or a purchase transfers across editions.
How popular is Minecraft?
In a June 1, 2026 announcement, Impact.com reported that Minecraft had sold over 300 million copies and called it the best-selling video game of all time. That is a company-reported sales figure, not an independently audited count established here.
