Joy Kachina won the 2025 Natural Landscape Photography Awards’ Photographer of the Year title, while Margrit Schwarz won Photograph of the Year. The distinction matters: one award recognizes a photographer’s overall results, the other a single image. Here are the NLPA winners, the scale of the competition, and two separate 2025 landscape-award highlights from Sony and Head On.

The Natural Landscape Photography Awards (NLPA) labels its 2025 results Year 5. Its official gallery separates photographer, single-image, category, project, and special awards, so the winners below are not all competing for the same kind of prize.
Photographer of the Year
- Joy Kachina — Photographer of the Year
- Lukas Furlan — runner-up
- Matt Jackisch — third place
- Scott Oller — fourth place
- Vojtech Schmidt — fifth place
- Magnus Reneflot — sixth place
Photograph of the Year
Margrit Schwarz received the single-image award. Schwarz describes the image as a synthesis of her feelings and experiences on a twelve-day river trip in the Grand Canyon, where she had been drawn to abstract forms shaped by stone, water, and time. View the NLPA 2025 results gallery.

Project and category winners
- Project Winner: Hanneke Van Camp, Sápmi – Living Landscapes, a project shaped by repeated visits to the Sami homeland in Northern Europe and attention to its landscapes and culture.
- Abstract Landscape: Ilan Shacham; Lukas Furlan was runner-up and Alex Pansier placed third.
- Tropical landscapes: Grégoire Pansu.
- Woodlands: Kenny Muir.
The NLPA gallery also has Grand Landscape, Intimate Landscape, Projects, and Special Awards sections. Together, these categories encompass expansive views, close studies, abstraction, and multi-image work rather than treating landscape photography as mountain panoramas alone.
How large was the NLPA 2025 competition?
According to the NLPA’s organizer-published figures, the competition received 11,023 photographs from 1,134 photographers in 64 countries. The organizer says 3,688 photographs reached RAW verification and final judging, and 130 photographs were selected for live finals. Those are successive stages, not interchangeable counts: the 3,688 figure does not mean every submitted image went through the same verification. NLPA says the live finals lasted five hours and were held via Zoom.
The organizer also reports 3,513 Grand Landscape photographs, 3,829 Intimate Landscape photographs, 1,422 Abstract Landscape photographs, and 235 Projects. These category totals describe different kinds of entries; projects are not directly comparable to individual photographs.
Other 2025 landscape photography award winners
“Landscape photography awards” can refer to different competitions and award scopes. The Sony World Photography Awards and Head On highlights below are separate from NLPA, with their own categories and selection contexts.
Rank #3
Sony World Photography Awards: Open Landscape
In the Open competition’s Landscape category, the World Photography Organisation names Ng Guang Ze the winner for Curved Stream. The organization’s description places the photograph at Wenhai, China, where a narrow stream crosses dark grassland toward a still lake. This is the Open Landscape category winner, not the overall Sony World Photography Awards winner.
The shortlist included Marcin Zajac’s Cathedral, made at Iceland’s Stuðlagil Canyon; Patrick Ems’s Arctic Silence, from Svalbard; Francisco Negroni’s The Lord of Volcanoes, depicting Chile’s Villarrica volcano during an electrical storm; and XiaoYing Shi’s Ground Vein, a drone view of Utah geology. Head On Landscape Awards
Head On named Liam Man the 2025 winner. Kelly Conlin was international runner-up, Harald Helle Australian runner-up, and Lee Fulmer won People’s Choice. The awards page lists 40 finalists.
Head On says its judging is blind, with artists’ names hidden, and describes the process as creating an even playing field. That is the organizer’s account of its method. It also describes a curatorial aim of seeking bold, daring, and exciting images. The 2025 exhibition was free at Bondi Beach Promenade in Sydney from 8 to 30 November 2025; it has concluded. See the Head On Landscape Awards page.
