A “no through traffic” illustration should show that the road does not provide a route onward—not that all access is necessarily forbidden. The exact wording and sign design depend on the jurisdiction: UK guidance uses “No through road for vehicular traffic,” while Queensland guidance distinguishes a no-through-road sign from “local traffic only” and “road closed” signs.
What a no-through-road sign communicates
The Queensland Government describes these signs as showing that “the road does not provide passage for continuing journeys.” In practical terms, a driver entering the indicated road cannot use it to continue through to another route. Queensland guidance says the signs are seen on local roads with a dead end.

UK Department for Transport guidance labels a design “No through road for vehicular traffic.” It also describes a sign used where a road is physically closed part-way along its length to prevent through traffic. These are jurisdiction-specific descriptions; they do not establish one universal design or use.
How it differs from similar signs
“No through road,” “local traffic only,” and “road closed” communicate different things. Queensland Government guidance makes these distinctions:

UK guidance adds a separate context: a no-through-road sign may be erected where a road is physically closed part-way along its length to prevent through traffic. Do not infer from the Queensland descriptions that every jurisdiction uses signs in precisely the same way.
UK direction signs and regulatory context
In the UK, the no-through-road symbol is not limited to a standalone sign. Department for Transport guidance describes it incorporated into a street nameplate and used to indicate a no-through-road in a direction from a junction ahead. The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 also include the symbol as an option in specified direction signs. This is a UK-specific regulatory point, not a rule for other countries.

How to depict the sign accurately
First decide whether the illustration is meant to represent a particular real-world sign or simply convey the idea of a dead-end route. If it represents traffic control, identify the jurisdiction and use that location’s prescribed wording and design. The UK and Queensland sources describe their own conventions and do not establish requirements elsewhere.
- For a UK depiction, the official guidance’s wording is “No through road for vehicular traffic”; the symbol also appears in some street-nameplate and direction-sign contexts.
- For a Queensland depiction, distinguish a no-through-road sign from signs for local traffic only or a road closed to traffic.
- For a general illustration without a specified location, avoid presenting one country’s wording or design as internationally standard.
The available official guidance does not prescribe an art style, medium, or illustration layout. Those choices should follow the purpose of the image rather than an assumed universal sign palette or format.
