Olympic rings clipart is available as an SVG on Wikimedia Commons, but a downloadable file is not automatically cleared for every use. Copyright status and permission to use Olympic insignia or trademarks are separate questions—especially for commercial, promotional or identity-building uses.
Where to find Olympic rings clipart
Wikimedia Commons lists an SVG file named “Olympic rings without rims.svg.” The listing identifies it as a 342 × 158 pixel SVG, names Pierre de Coubertin as the original author and gives 1913 as the artwork’s date. Its file history records a color update on May 31, 2024, to follow the 2023 guidelines.
SVG is a vector format, so the artwork can generally be resized without the pixelation associated with enlarging a small raster image. The Commons listing provides access to the original file. Check the file page itself before downloading: its copyright notice does not grant blanket permission to use Olympic insignia or trademarks.
Copyright status is not the same as permission to use the Olympic symbol
The Commons page marks the file’s copyright status separately and warns that restrictions on insignia and trademark rights may still apply. Treat that distinction as important: a public-domain notice, where applicable, addresses copyright in the artwork; it does not by itself settle whether a particular use of the Olympic symbol is allowed.

The IOC says rights to Olympic properties, including their use for profit-making, commercial or advertising purposes, belong exclusively to the IOC. It also describes the Nairobi Treaty, adopted in 1981 and administered by WIPO, as requiring participating states to prohibit commercial use of signs consisting of or containing the Olympic symbol without IOC authorization. Rules and their application can vary by jurisdiction, so this general explanation is not a determination about a specific project.
In the United States, the USOPC’s commercial and brand usage guidance says federal law gives it extensive rights to control use of its intellectual property. It flags presentations that could suggest an official relationship, including placing the rings in a publication masthead or website banner. For a proposed commercial or jurisdiction-specific use, consult the relevant official guidance and obtain advice specific to your circumstances.
How the IOC says the rings should be reproduced
The IOC’s Guidelines for Editorial Use set out reproduction rules for editorial uses. They state: “The Olympic rings should never be altered in any way, including modifying the official colours or the order of the colours.” The guidance also says the rings should remain entirely visible and undistorted, arranged horizontally with three rings above and two below. Its full-color version is subject to background and color rules, so check the document for the requirements that apply to your layout.

The guidelines distinguish expressly permitted editorial uses from other uses: “For any use of the Olympic Properties not expressly permitted in the present document, prior written approval by the IOC is needed.” Do not assume that following the visual reproduction rules alone authorizes a use outside the guidance.

Before using a downloaded file
- Confirm the source and file: Review the Commons file page, its current file history and its stated copyright information.
- Check the proposed use: A personal illustration, an editorial layout and a commercial advertisement can raise different questions. Do not infer permission from the file’s availability.
- Preserve the design: For editorial reproduction, follow the IOC’s rules on visibility, proportions, horizontal arrangement, colors and background.
- Seek specific authorization when needed: The IOC guidance requires prior written approval for uses of Olympic properties it does not expressly permit. Commercial or jurisdiction-specific questions may require qualified guidance for the relevant context.
