The right open-source CAD tool depends on what you need to make: OpenCAD Studio is a strong browser option for DWG/DXF drafting, while TweakCAD and NASSCAD target browser-based 3D modeling. For code-driven models, CadQuery is a Python library rather than a turnkey online editor; for desktop 2D drafting, LibreCAD is a useful alternative. Check where each tool runs and which file formats and features it actually supports before choosing.

Choose by workflow, not by a single “best” tool

Browser CAD can mean a drafting workspace, a parametric 3D editor, a mechanical CAD app, or a browser interface for a particular desktop application port. Those are different workflows. Some tools are designed to run in a browser; others are installed desktop applications or libraries that can be used through separate interfaces.

For 2D drawings and DWG/DXF work, consider OpenCAD Studio. For browser-based parametric 3D modeling and remixing, consider TweakCAD. NASSCAD focuses on mechanical parts, assemblies, STEP/IFC workflows, and scripting. If you want to generate geometry with Python, CadQuery may fit, but it is a library, not a complete browser CAD editor. LibreCAD is a desktop choice for open-source 2D drafting.

How the options compare

Tool Main workflow Where it runs Formats or notable capabilities Important limitation
OpenCAD Studio Command-oriented 2D drafting and kernel-backed 3D solid modeling Browser build and desktop application DWG/DXF open and save, with targets from R14 through R2018 Browser build is single-threaded; several integrations are desktop-only
TweakCAD Parametric 3D modeling, sketch-to-solid workflow, and remixing Browser STEP, STL, 3MF, DXF, and SVG FreeCAD import is rolling out with limited current scope; broader coverage and round-trip support are roadmap items
NASSCAD Mechanical parts, assemblies, fabrication preparation, and scripting Browser, with an optional Windows companion engine STEP, IFC, STL, OBJ, 3MF, GLB, and PLY Browser Boolean operations are single-core; optional native engine has separate requirements
CadQuery Parametric 3D modeling with Python Python library; separate GUI options are documented STEP, AMF, 3MF, and STL It is a model-generation library, not a turnkey online CAD editor
FreeCAD Broad parametric desktop CAD ecosystem Desktop; a separate third-party browser port is available Many formats and workbenches, including 2D drafting, BIM, 3D printing, and CAM/CNC Do not confuse the third-party FreeCAD-Web port with an official browser edition
LibreCAD 2D drafting Installed desktop software Open-source 2D CAD for Windows, macOS, and Linux Its official site presents it as desktop software, not a browser app

Browser-based drafting and 3D modeling

OpenCAD Studio: browser DWG/DXF drafting with 3D capabilities

OpenCAD Studio describes a free, GPL-3.0 project with a browser workspace for 2D drafting, hatches, layouts, and kernel-backed 3D solid modeling. Its project documentation says drawings are selected locally and downloaded back to the device. It describes DWG and DXF open/save support with targets from R14 through R2018.

SUNLU PLA Filament 1.75mm, 250g Spool Bundle, 3D Printer Filament
  • 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
  • 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
  • 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
  • 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
  • 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use

The browser build is single-threaded, and OpenCAD Studio says desktop is better for the largest drawings. Native plugins, system printing, PDF output, scripts, and headless automation are desktop-only. Choose the browser workspace when avoiding installation and editing DWG/DXF files are priorities; evaluate the desktop application if you need those integrations or work with very large drawings.

TweakCAD: browser-based parametric 3D design

TweakCAD describes itself as an open-source parametric 3D editor that runs in a browser. Its workflow covers sketching and turning designs into solids, with parametric variants and community remixing. It lists STEP, STL, and 3MF for 3D, plus DXF and SVG for 2D.

TweakCAD says FreeCAD import is rolling out and currently brings in sketches, pads, and pockets. The project describes broader part coverage and round-trip support as roadmap work, so do not assume full FreeCAD compatibility today. Consider it when browser-based parametric modeling and remixing match your workflow, and test the specific import and export you need.

NASSCAD says its browser Boolean operations use Manifold compiled to WebAssembly and run single-core. It also offers an optional MEDUSA engine for Windows x64, which it says adds native multi-core Booleans and additional STEP capabilities. Treat those as project-stated constraints and features rather than independent performance tests. NASSCAD may suit users who prioritize STEP/IFC assemblies and scripting, provided its browser and companion-engine requirements fit their setup.

Script-first CAD: distinguish tools from editors

CadQuery: a Python library, not a browser CAD app

CadQuery is an open-source Python library for creating parametric 3D models. Its documentation describes a goal of making plain-text models editable and executable with only a browser, and lists separate GUI options such as CQ-editor and a Jupyter extension. That does not make CadQuery itself a turnkey browser editor.

CadQuery documents exports including STEP, AMF, 3MF, and STL. It is worth considering if you prefer to define models in Python and want to build that workflow around a library and a compatible interface. If you want an integrated browser app with a scripting console, NASSCAD describes that kind of experience through NassScript.

FreeCAD: desktop ecosystem and a separate browser port

FreeCAD’s project describes a broad parametric 3D modeler with parametric objects, Python customization, many file formats, and workbenches for areas including 2D drafting, BIM, 3D printing, and CAM/CNC. Its official feature information describes a desktop application; readers seeking that established ecosystem should distinguish it from any browser deployment.

Virtastic describes a separate FreeCAD-Web WebAssembly port with a Qt interface, OpenCASCADE geometry kernel, and embedded Python. Virtastic lists an approximately 115 MB first load and desktop browser requirements of Chrome or Edge 137+ or Firefox 153+. Those are details stated for Virtastic’s port, not requirements for all FreeCAD installations or a guarantee that the port has the same support as the desktop release.

LibreCAD: an open-source desktop option for 2D drafting

LibreCAD is a useful comparison if your actual need is open-source 2D drafting rather than CAD in a browser. Its official website describes free, open-source 2D CAD for Windows, Apple/macOS, and Linux, under GPLv2. It is desktop software, so choose it for an installed drafting workflow rather than browser access.

Match file formats to the handoff

Formats serve different purposes. Confirm the receiving application’s needs and test a representative file rather than assuming that two tools’ format lists imply full compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Format family Typical use What to verify
DWG and DXF Drafting and 2D drawing exchange Supported versions, entities, layers, and whether the workflow is read/write or export-only
STEP and IGES Engineering geometry exchange Whether the receiving tool can use the geometry as intended; an exported solid does not necessarily preserve a parametric history
STL and 3MF 3D printing and mesh workflows Units, mesh quality, and whether the output suits the slicer or fabrication process
IFC Building-model workflows Whether the target application supports the entities and workflow you need

For a reliable handoff, save the editable source where available, export the required interchange format, and open that export in the next application before relying on it for fabrication or project delivery.

Browser requirements and practical limits

Browser delivery does not guarantee the same performance, integrations, or scale across projects. OpenCAD Studio says its browser build is single-threaded and recommends desktop for its largest drawings. Virtastic’s FreeCAD-Web page lists specific desktop browser versions and an approximately 115 MB first load. NASSCAD says its browser Boolean operations are single-core and describes an optional Windows companion engine. These are statements from the projects and service pages, not independent benchmark results.

Before committing to a tool, check its current browser requirements, whether it processes files locally or uses a service, and which features are browser-only or desktop-only. Test the exact import, edit, and export steps you need with a non-sensitive sample file.

How to choose

  1. You need browser-based DWG/DXF drafting: Try OpenCAD Studio, and check whether its single-threaded browser build and browser-only feature set suit your drawings.
  2. You want parametric 3D modeling and remixing in a browser: Evaluate TweakCAD, while treating its stated FreeCAD import scope as a rollout rather than full round-trip compatibility.
  3. You work with mechanical parts, STEP assemblies, or IFC: Evaluate NASSCAD and confirm whether its browser processing or optional Windows companion fits your requirements.
  4. You want to define 3D models in Python: Look at CadQuery and its documented GUI options; do not mistake the library for an integrated online editor.
  5. You need a broad parametric desktop ecosystem: Consider FreeCAD’s desktop application. If trying a browser build, identify it as a particular third-party port and check that port’s requirements.
  6. You need installed open-source 2D drafting: Consider LibreCAD as a desktop alternative, not a browser CAD tool.

Is CadQuery an online CAD editor?

No. CadQuery is an open-source Python library for parametric 3D models. Its documentation lists separate GUI options, including CQ-editor and a Jupyter extension.

Which formats should I use for drafting, engineering, and 3D printing?

DWG/DXF are relevant to drafting, STEP/IGES to engineering geometry exchange, STL/3MF to printing workflows, and IFC to building models. The right choice depends on the next application and whether it supports the specific workflow and entities you need.

Can I assume that TweakCAD fully imports and round-trips FreeCAD files?

No. TweakCAD says FreeCAD import is rolling out and currently covers sketches, pads, and pockets. Broader part coverage and round-trip support are described as roadmap work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does browser-based CAD always run locally?

No general assumption is safe. Check the specific project’s documentation for file handling and processing. OpenCAD Studio says its browser workspace selects drawings locally and downloads them back to the device; do not generalize that statement to other tools.
