What inspired the song?
In a 2020 interview with New Jersey Stage, Dee recalled that he and Glover wrote “Peppermint Twist” on a Sunday afternoon in October 1961. He tied it to the band’s time at the Peppermint Lounge, saying the Starliters became the club’s house band after a September 1960 booking and stayed for 13 months. Those dates and details are Dee’s recollections in the interview, rather than independently verified venue records.
Dee also recalled that Glover encouraged him to sing the lead after other singers had been tried. Explaining Glover’s reasoning, Dee said: “Sometimes, the songwriter can get to the essence of a song better than the greatest singer.” This is Dee recounting Glover’s view, not a direct quotation recorded from Glover.

When was “Peppermint Twist” released?
The available listings do not establish a definitive recording or release chronology. The artist-associated Bandcamp album page displays January 1, 1961, while Dee recalled writing the song in October 1961. Because those dates conflict, the displayed album date should not be treated as proof of when the song was recorded or first released.
Listings can also refer to different versions. Apple Music identifies a “Re-Recording” separately from other song listings, so a displayed date for a particular streaming item does not by itself show that it is the original recording. Check the performer, version label, and album or catalog details when comparing entries.

The Official Charts Company records the single entering the UK chart on February 14, 1962, and reaching a peak of number 33 on March 7, 1962. That is a UK chart result; it does not establish a US chart position. The sources cited here also do not establish a reliable sales total.
