For a first embroidery project, choose a small design, match the fabric and needle to the technique, and begin with a few basic stitches. This guide focuses on hand embroidery; machine embroidery is a different process that requires a machine and its own setup. The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance describes embroidery as “the art of embellishment with hand-stitched designs,” a useful way to think about a craft that is primarily decorative rather than structural.

Choose a kind of embroidery before choosing supplies

Embroidery is a family of techniques, not one fixed method. Start by asking what you want the stitching to do: follow a fabric grid, draw an outline, fill an area, attach another material, or create a raised effect. Those choices guide the fabric, thread and needle you need.

Technique family How it works Ground and materials to consider
Counted-thread work Stitches are placed by counting vertical or horizontal fabric threads. Usually an even-weave fabric, such as Aida; choose a needle suited to the thread.
Freestyle surface embroidery The design sits independently of the fabric’s weave. Plain-weave cotton such as muslin or linen is a common general choice; patterns may specify a different fabric.
Cross-stitch Two short diagonal stitches cross to form an X. Often worked as counted embroidery on even-weave cloth.
Canvas work Stitches cover or build a design on a stiff, open mesh ground. Open-weave canvas and a needle appropriate to the yarn or thread.
Crewelwork Surface embroidery worked with crewel wool. A strong, tightly woven fabric and a needle that accommodates the wool.
Appliqué Shaped pieces of fabric are attached to a base fabric, often with stitching. Choose a stable base and thread suited to the fabric and attachment stitches.
Bead embroidery Beads are stitched onto a ground fabric. Use a needle and thread that can pass through the beads and securely hold them.
Stumpwork Stitched elements are raised above the ground for dimensional effects. Materials and construction depend on the raised element and design.

These are broad families, not interchangeable recipes. The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance notes that a pattern may call for a particular fabric, so follow its instructions when they differ from general recommendations.

Hand embroidery and machine embroidery are different routes

Hand embroidery uses a needle moved by hand. Machine embroidery uses a machine workflow and associated equipment; SINGER’s beginner quick-start guide addresses that equipment-based route. If you are following the hand-stitching instructions below, you do not need machine embroidery equipment.

Gather a simple hand-embroidery starter set

A practical first set can be small. The Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA) lists needles, fabric or Aida cloth, embroidery floss, scissors and a hoop as beginner supplies. The hoop is optional, and a pattern may call for different materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fabric: Use Aida or canvas when the design depends on a regular grid. For non-counted surface work, muslin or linen are common plain-weave options. Aida is available in different stitch counts; canvas is an open, even mesh; muslin is plain-weave cotton; and linen has characteristic slubs.
  • Thread: Embroidery floss is a loosely twisted, slightly glossy thread, usually cotton, made up of six strands that can be separated. Silk, linen and rayon flosses are also available. Other choices include perle cotton, crewel yarn, silk thread and tapestry yarn; their fibers and weights differ, so they are not automatic substitutes for one another.
  • Needle: Crewel or embroidery needles have larger eyes that help when threading multiple strands. Blunt tapestry needles help avoid splitting yarn. Millinery needles, whose eye and shaft are the same thickness, are often used for French and bullion knots.
  • Scissors: Small, sharp embroidery scissors or snips make it easier to cut thread cleanly. EGA recommends keeping embroidery scissors for thread rather than using them to cut paper.
  • Hoop or frame: Use one if it helps stabilize your fabric and manage tension. The Alliance describes a hoop as a way to stabilize and stretch fabric to help ensure even stitch tension; it is useful, not mandatory.

For a beginner, a generic hand-embroidery kit can be convenient if its contents suit the project. You can also assemble the same basic materials individually; check the pattern before buying so you do not end up with a fabric, thread or needle unsuited to the work.

Prepare the fabric and design

  1. Choose a small motif. Decide whether it is counted or free-form. A counted pattern generally calls for an even-weave ground; free-form work can be stitched independently of the weave.
  2. Transfer the design if needed. For a light design, trace through a bright window or light box with a light pencil line or water-soluble pen. Other options include carbon paper, an iron-on transfer used according to its maker’s instructions, or water-soluble stabilizer.
  3. Use stabilizer as directed. Trace the motif onto water-soluble stabilizer, hoop it with the fabric, stitch through both, then dissolve the stabilizer when the stitching is complete.
  4. Hoop or frame the fabric if useful. Secure the fabric so it is stable without distorting it. You can stitch without a hoop if the fabric and technique allow you to manage tension comfortably.

Learn a few foundational stitches

Start with a simple stitch that suits the design rather than trying to learn every stitch at once. The Alliance identifies running stitch, backstitch and cross-stitch as approachable basics.

  • Running stitch: A line of separate stitches with small gaps between them. It is useful for simple outlines and dashed lines.
  • Backstitch: A connected line often used for outlines and lettering. Each new stitch returns to meet the end of the previous one.
  • Cross-stitch: Two diagonal stitches cross to form an X, commonly placed by counting fabric threads on an even-weave ground.

Keep the thread tension even. Pulling too tightly can pucker or distort the fabric. If the design is counted, use the fabric grid to keep stitch placement consistent; for surface work, focus on following the transferred line or pattern.

Finish and care for a first piece

  1. Secure the thread on the back. Finish with a small knot or weave the thread under existing stitches.
  2. Remove the work from its hoop. Take the fabric out when stitching is finished rather than leaving it stretched in the frame.
  3. Press carefully. Place the piece face down on a towel to protect the stitching while pressing, following the Alliance’s finishing guidance.

Use a sampler to build confidence

A sampler is a small practice piece that demonstrates several stitches or techniques. It lets you compare how stitches look, practise controlling tension and see how thread behaves before committing to a larger design. EGA’s beginner embroidery guide links to help on needles, fabric, floss, basic stitches, terminology, mistakes, techniques, free projects and pattern design. Its guide to embroidery at home, dated April 21, 2020, also points to tutorials, samplers and finishing resources.
