Scrappy wall quilts turn leftover fabric into a finished hanging, and they can look either deliberately orderly or freely improvised. Match the method to the size of your scraps: use larger pieces for squares and blocks, and save narrow or irregular offcuts for string piecing, appliqué, or collage. A repeated background, limited palette, or planned contrast can help mixed prints feel cohesive.
Choose a project by scrap size and style

These approaches are described as scrap-friendly by The Quilters’ Guild. For a collection of structured wall-quilt patterns, AllPeopleQuilt’s 32 scrappy wall quilt projects includes Starburst, Scrappy Squares, Flying Geese Wall Hanging, Pixelated Diamond Wall Hanging, and 1930s Scrappy Wall Hanging.
Make mixed prints feel intentional
A scrappy quilt does not have to mean using every fabric in equal measure or arranging pieces randomly. Choose the degree of control that suits the prints you have:

- Free mix: Combine prints without a strict palette for a lively, varied surface.
- Limited palette: Pull scraps from a few related colors so different patterns still share a visual thread.
- Repeated background: Use the same background fabric to give varied prints breathing room. AllPeopleQuilt’s Flying Geese wall hanging, for example, uses one background fabric per vertical row.
- Planned contrast or sashing: Place light and dark fabrics deliberately, or separate blocks with sashing so the design reads clearly.
These are design choices, not rules: a lively assortment may suit a relaxed hanging, while a repeated background or contrast plan can make a busy set of scraps easier to read.

Gather materials for the pattern you choose
There is no universal supply list for every wall quilt. The pattern and finished dimensions determine how much fabric, batting, and backing you need. Scraps may cover the top, but backing and batting may need to come from separate yardage or materials already on hand.
As one project-specific example, the National Quilt Museum’s What in Carnation Wall Hanging Class lists a sewing machine and accessories, thread, pins or clips, a hand-sewing needle, batting, backing, and a quilting ruler about 6 by 12 inches. It calls for batting at least 22 inches square for that class project; those dimensions are not a general requirement for other patterns.

Find a pattern or a guided project
Browse a range of wall-quilt designs
AllPeopleQuilt’s project collection is a useful starting point when you want to compare block-based ideas, including square-and-rectangle designs such as Starburst and more specific layouts such as Flying Geese or a pixelated diamond. Check each pattern’s dimensions and fabric requirements before deciding whether your scraps are sufficient.
Try a museum block program
The National Quilt Museum says its Block of the Month Club has no fee or sign-up requirement and offers downloadable patterns. Participants can choose favorite blocks or mix and match them. Its Round 8 is scheduled to run from April through December 2026, with patterns planned for release on the first of each month at noon Central Time; check the current page for the latest schedule.

Join a quilt along
The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian’s 2026 Quilt Along offers free participation and patterns, but materials are not included. The project uses four 10-inch blocks and a 5-inch border for an approximately 55-by-22-inch finished wall hanging. The museum defines a quilt along as “an event that invites participants to create the same quilting project at the same time either virtually or in person.”

Wall quilts have no single standard size in the cited examples. Before cutting, compare the pattern’s finished dimensions with the place where you plan to hang it, then check that you have enough usable pieces for its blocks, background, and any borders. If the available scraps are small or irregular, choose a method that can absorb variation rather than forcing them into uniform pieces.
