Pumpkin sewing projects span several different crafts: a small stuffed pincushion, a seasonal fabric decoration, an embroidered motif on a towel or cushion cover, and a full-size quilt. Choose by what you want to make and how much sewing you want to take on—not by treating every pumpkin pattern as the same project.

Use scraps for a segmented design
Sew Magazine’s Quick Pumpkin Pincushions pattern forms a pumpkin from eight lozenge-shaped segments. Its listed essentials are cotton fabrics, green felt, and orange or green spotted ribbon. The design can be made from scraps, which makes it a practical option when you want a small project without committing to a large cut of fabric. The listing says the pattern is available to SewHQ members, so confirm membership and download terms on the current page before planning around it.

Choose a pattern with a fuller supply list
The Coats & Clark Pumpkin Patch Pincushion is labeled easy and approximately 8 inches (20 cm). Its supply list includes orange fabric, green fabric for leaves, brown fabric for a stem, cardboard for the base, green baby rickrack, a sewing machine, polyester fiberfill, a hand-sewing needle, fabric adhesive, and glue. The listing describes making one pincushion or several pumpkins in fall prints. It offered a free download on the page accessed; check the current listing for availability.
Try a smaller scrap-based pincushion
The Craftsy-hosted Everything Pumpkin PDF calls its pincushion easy and specifies six pumpkin fabric shapes, cotton thread, a large-eye needle, and filling such as ground walnut shells, along with cutting and marking tools. Sewn Wyoming’s Big Dolores is a separate 2-inch pincushion pattern labeled “Confident Beginner”; its techniques include basic sewing, curved seams, basting, and stuffing. Keep the patterns’ dimensions and material lists separate when deciding what to make.

Embroider pumpkins on a towel or cushion cover
If you want a pumpkin motif without making a three-dimensional form, DMC’s free Pumpkins and Squashes design is intended for a kitchen towel or cushion cover. DMC recommends golden shades of Pearl Cotton embroidery floss. This route calls for stitching onto a suitable textile, not joining fabric segments or adding stuffing, so it fits a different kind of sewing session than the pincushion patterns.

For a room-scale seasonal project, Robert Kaufman lists Pumpkin Patch, a pattern designed by Ariga Wilson with finished dimensions of 60 × 60 inches. The listing names Kona Cotton, Quilter’s Linen, and Lights Out as fabric types. This is the largest project among these examples and involves piecing and quilting rather than making one small stuffed pumpkin. Review the linked pattern listing for its current instructions and access terms before choosing fabric.

Choose by materials, skill, and pattern access
- For fabric scraps: Start with a small segmented or scrap-based pincushion; the Sew Magazine design specifically notes scraps, while the Everything Pumpkin pattern specifies six fabric shapes.
