Felted wool can become a flat sheet, a shaped textile, or a small sculpted object. The two main ways to make it are wet felting, which uses moisture and agitation to interlock loose fibers, and needle felting, which tangles fibers with repeated strokes of a barbed needle. Choose wet felting for connected fabric and needle felting for sculpted forms or localized detail.

What does “felted wool” mean?

Felted wool is wool whose fibers have been interlocked into a denser material. It is different from loose wool roving or tops: roving is a starting fiber that can be felted, while felt is the resulting fabric or form. Both wet and needle felting can turn loose wool into a finished piece, but they use different actions and suit different projects. The California College of the Arts Soft Lab and Uppingham Yarns describe the two approaches and their materials.

Choose wet felting or needle felting

What matters Wet felting Needle felting
How it works Warm water, often soap, plus rubbing, pressure, and agitation help fibers interlock. A barbed needle repeatedly punctures wool, tangling its fibers.
Best suited to Connected sheets and shaped textile forms. Sculpted forms and small areas of detail.
Adjusting the work Once the felt is dense, adding fibers or changing its shape can be harder. It is easier to add wool or adjust a form as you work.
Typical supplies Wool roving or tops and warm soapy water; netting and a rolling surface can help. Wool roving, a barbed felting needle, and a foam pad.
Trade-off Different fibers and techniques shrink differently, so plan for shrinkage. Large projects can take time because the wool is built up through repeated punctures.

This comparison reflects the methods described by the Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance; it is a practical guide, not a controlled comparison of materials or working times.

Choose wool and gather supplies

Loose wool roving or tops are common starting materials for either method. The CCA Soft Lab lists wool among felting materials, and Uppingham Yarns notes that sheep wool and other animal fibers can felt. Do not assume every wool yarn will work: Uppingham Yarns cautions that machine-washable yarns have been treated and will not felt.

Before planning a precise finished size for a wet-felted piece, allow for shrinkage. The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance says shrinkage varies with wool type and technique and offers 30% as its own rule of thumb, not a universal or guaranteed rate. A small test can help you judge how your chosen fiber and process behave.

How to wet-felt a simple sheet

  1. Lay out the wool. Arrange wispy fibers in crossing layers so the piece has coverage in more than one direction.
  2. Wet the fibers. Add warm soapy water, wetting the layout without disturbing it too much.
  3. Start gently. Covering the wool with netting can help keep fibers in place. Rub gently until the layers begin to hold together.
  4. Roll and agitate. Continue working the piece by rolling and agitating it so the fibers interlock and the felt becomes denser.
  5. Rinse and dry. Rinse the finished piece and leave it to dry flat.

This sequence follows the Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance’s wet-felting guidance. Because fiber and technique affect shrinkage, use the process as a starting point rather than a guarantee of a particular final size.

Use felted wool in a project

Flat felt and shaped or sculpted wool open up different kinds of projects. Examples in the Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance and The Craft Room’s quick guide to felting include:

  • Flat or wearable pieces: mats, bags, hats, slippers, and wall hangings.
  • Small decorative or sculptural pieces: heart danglers, felt animals, figures, and a needle-felted sheep.
  • Useful shaped objects: a cactus pincushion.
  • Combined-fabric work: a nuno-felt pillow. Nuno felting bonds wool fibers to an open-weave fabric.

These are examples rather than a complete list. For a painted or mixed-media work, the sources cited here establish felting methods and craft projects, but do not establish how felted wool performs with paint or as a painting support. Treat that as a separate materials question rather than assuming felt behaves like canvas or paper.

Care for finished felt

Hand-wash felted wool gently in cool water. The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance cautions that hot water and agitation can cause further felting or shrinkage, so avoid treating a finished piece as though its shape and size cannot change.
