Central Shaheed Minar is a national monument in Dhaka commemorating people killed during the 1952 Bengali Language Movement demonstrations. Built on the Dhaka Medical College premises, it is also the gathering place for annual observances on 21 February, known as Ekushey February or Shaheed Dibas.
What does Shaheed Minar commemorate?
The monument remembers Bengali demonstrators killed on 21 and 22 February 1952, when police opened fire near Dhaka Medical College and Ramna Park. The first memorial was temporary. The Bangladesh Tourism Board dates its construction by students to 23 February 1952 and its demolition to the following day. Who designed Central Shaheed Minar?
The Dhaka District Administration associates the later monument’s design with Hamidur Rahman and says Novera Ahmed directly supervised its construction. Its account places the foundation stone in 1956, the start of construction in 1957, and the inauguration in 1963. Dhaka District Administration

The structure’s later history is also significant: the Bangladesh Tourism Board says it was demolished during the 1971 Liberation War, rebuilt after independence, and expanded in 1983. Bangladesh Tourism Board
Whether the present building fully reflects Rahman’s original design remains a matter of interpretation. In a 20 February 2026 report, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha attributed to architect Marina Tabassum the assessment that the current structure may not fully reproduce his original design. Why is 21 February important at the monument?
Central Shaheed Minar is the focus of national, mourning, cultural, and other observances on 21 February. The day is known in Bangladesh as Ekushey February or Shaheed Dibas.
