The right table runner starts with your table’s actual measurements, not a label such as “six-foot table.” Measure the tabletop length and width, choose the end overhang (drop) you want, then select a width that leaves room for plates and glasses. As a practical starting point, calculate runner length as table length plus twice your desired drop; a 6-inch drop at each end means a runner at least 12 inches longer than the tabletop. Birch Lane’s guide and Linenforce’s size guide present these as recommendations, not fixed standards.
Measure the table before buying
Use a tape measure to record the usable tabletop length and width. Do not rely on nominal furniture descriptions: two tables sold as six feet long can have different finished dimensions.

- Measure the tabletop width at its widest point.
- Decide how much fabric should extend beyond each end. Six inches per end is a common starting point; a shorter drop looks closer to the surface, while a longer drop creates a more formal effect.
- Add twice the chosen drop to the table length. For example, a 72-inch tabletop with a 6-inch drop needs a runner about 84 inches long.
Birch Lane recommends a runner roughly one-third the table’s width and at least 12 inches longer than the table. Treat that proportion as a styling guide: seating, table shape, centerpiece size and personal preference can justify a different result.
A runner laid over a tablecloth should not hang lower than the tablecloth, according to Birch Lane. That is a visual styling recommendation, not a safety requirement.

How wide should a table runner be?
Width controls how much tabletop remains visible. A narrow runner emphasizes the table surface; a wider one makes the center of the setting more prominent. Place your usual plates and glasses on the table before ordering, and check that the runner will not crowd them.
SilvesterFabric’s size guide advises leaving at least 10 inches of bare tabletop on each side. This is that vendor’s recommendation rather than a universal rule, so use the actual place-setting layout as your final check.

What size works on a six-foot rectangular table?
Measure it rather than assuming one “six-foot” runner fits every table. If the tabletop is exactly 72 inches long and you want a 6-inch drop at each end, an 84-inch runner is the mathematical starting point. If the table is shorter or longer, or you prefer a different drop, adjust the length accordingly. Compare the runner’s listed finished dimensions, not only its product name.
When two available lengths are close, choose the shorter one for a restrained, tabletop-focused look or the longer one for more visible overhang. Confirm that the chosen width works with your seating and serving dishes.

Choose fabric for the way you will use the runner
Compare fiber content, texture, drape and the care label together. Cotton, linen, cotton-linen blends and polyester can all be suitable, but they behave differently and product instructions are not interchangeable.

Most dining-oriented examples are about 12–18 inches wide, but custom event runners can be dramatically wider. Signs.com lists custom polyester event runners at 90 inches long and 24–60 inches wide. Those dimensions are intended for display or branding and should not be transferred to a dining table without checking the fit, overhang and place settings.
A practical buying checklist
- Record the table’s actual length and width.
- Choose an end drop and calculate length as tabletop length plus twice that drop.
- Compare width with the space required by plates, cutlery, glasses and serving pieces.
- Read the fiber composition and look at the fabric’s texture and drape.
- Confirm washing, drying, ironing and bleach restrictions on the specific listing or sewn-in label.
- For layered styling, ensure the runner’s ends do not extend below the tablecloth.
- For event or branded use, verify the unusually large width before ordering.
How to maintain a runner
Care instructions are product-specific. Remove food promptly, follow the stated water temperature and cycle, and use only the drying method permitted by the label. Do not assume that a cotton-linen runner and a printed polyester runner can share the same bleach, heat or tumble-drying routine. Product specifications and availability can change, so check the current listing and label when you purchase.
