Torn-paper collage turns hand-torn paper pieces into an image. Choose paper for its color, pattern, thickness, and texture; arrange the pieces on a sturdy backing before gluing them down. Folding a sheet where you want to tear can help you make straighter shapes, while an irregular torn edge can add visible fibers and texture.
What is torn-paper collage?
In torn-paper collage, you make an image by arranging and attaching paper shapes. The technique can combine different papers and can include both torn and cut edges. The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum demonstrates the approach in a layered paper cityscape.

Here, “torn paper” means paper deliberately torn for an artwork. Tearing paper for a new collage is different from repairing a historic or valuable work on paper; conservation requires treatments tailored to the object.
What materials do you need?
A basic project needs assorted paper, a sturdy backing sheet, and glue. Optional scissors and drawing tools let you add clean-cut shapes or drawn details. These are material categories for the activity, not tested brand recommendations.

The Hirshhorn’s “Tear Up The Town!” activity lists a sturdy collage surface, assorted paper, mark-making tools, scissors, and glue.
How do you make a torn-paper collage?
- Choose a subject and gather papers. Pick colors and patterns that help describe the subject. For a cityscape, for example, different papers can become buildings and other scene elements.
- Make the shapes. Tear them by hand for irregular edges, or cut some with scissors if you want a clean edge. To make a straighter torn shape, fold the paper where you want the tear and pull along the fold. This can help with control, but it does not guarantee a perfectly straight edge.
- Arrange the pieces before gluing. Move shapes around until the composition works. The Hirshhorn activity suggests photographing an arrangement you like so you can refer to it as you build the scene.
- Build in layers. Place background or distant elements first, then add nearer shapes on top, following the layering approach in the museum activity.
- Attach the pieces. Glue the shapes to the backing once you are happy with their arrangement.
What paper is best for torn-paper art?
There is no single best paper for every collage. The National Gallery of Art notes that artists choose paper according to their purpose and that papers vary in color, thickness, texture, and source fiber. Treat those properties as design choices rather than a universal ranking.

MoMA’s account of Hans Arp’s Untitled (Collage with Squares Arranged according to the Law of Chance) (1916–17) describes torn blue and white paper. Close examination suggests the artist used heavyweight, possibly fine-art paper; slanted tears expose the sheets’ inner fibers. That is one artwork’s material example, not a requirement for collage in general. MoMA also connects the work with chance procedures attributed to Arp while noting that its composition may show conscious control.
How do you tear paper into straighter shapes?
Fold the paper along the intended tear line, then tear along the fold. Folding can make a shape easier to guide, as the Hirshhorn’s beginner activity suggests, but paper does not always tear identically and the fold is not a guarantee of a straight edge. If you need a clean, precise boundary, cut it with scissors. You can combine cut and torn edges in the same collage.

When is torn paper a conservation issue?
If you are making a new collage, ordinary craft supplies may suit the project. If a historic, valuable, or otherwise important paper object is torn, do not treat collage methods as a repair guide or use household tape casually.
The National Gallery of Art describes conservation work that can include mending tears, filling losses, and selecting appropriate storage, handling, and display. The Smithsonian American Art Museum also identifies removing harmful attachments such as pressure-sensitive tape and poor-quality matting, and using chemically stable, acid-free housing materials, as conservation measures. In a discussion of paper conservation, MoMA conservators describe using Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste for some repairs and say they do not recommend manufactured pressure-sensitive tape for those repairs. These are examples of specialist conservation practice, not a do-it-yourself recipe.

The Canadian Conservation Institute explains that paper fibers and humidity affect paper strength and dimensional stability, and that environmental changes can stress paper objects that are restrained. A damaged valuable object should be assessed by a qualified paper conservator rather than repaired with a craft technique.
