The app behind that enthusiastic wallpaper recommendation is Dream by WOMBO, an AI art generator from Wombo Studios. You describe an image, choose a style, generate artwork, save it, and then apply it through your phone’s normal wallpaper controls. It is still available for iPhone, iPad, and Android, but it is no longer accurate to call it simply a free wallpaper app: current store listings show in-app purchases and subscription plans.
The original Droid Life article appeared on March 14, 2022, when its writer reported 18 styles, no advertisements, and no apparent in-app purchases. Those were observations of that 2022 version, not promises about the current product. (Read the original coverage.)

Dream is primarily a mobile AI-art platform, not a catalog of ready-made wallpapers. Its current iOS listing promotes text-to-image generation, AI video, photo-to-video animation, photo-to-art transformations, text-based image editing, more than 50 art styles, and more than 10 video styles. A generated image can still make an excellent phone background, but wallpaper is now one use case inside a much broader app.
The current listings are available on the US App Store and Google Play. The Android and iOS versions may not expose identical tools, limits, prices, or update schedules.

How to make a wallpaper
Menu names can change between app versions, so treat this as the workflow rather than a promise that every button has the same label.
- Install Dream from the official iOS or Android store listing.
- Enter a specific description of the scene you want.
- Choose an available visual style.
- Generate the image and inspect it at phone-screen size.
- Save or share the result.
- Use your phone’s wallpaper settings to apply it to the home screen, lock screen, or both.
The 2022 article described publishing, saving, and using generated art as wallpaper. The current store descriptions emphasize general image and video creation, so confirm that any direct “set as background” shortcut exists in your installed build instead of assuming the old interface remains.

Check the image before applying it
- Make sure the main subject is not under the lock-screen clock, widgets, or app icons.
- Preview the crop; phone aspect ratios vary, and an image can lose its focal point at the edges.
- Look for distorted faces, hands, architecture, and accidental lettering.
- Test icon legibility with your real icon layout, not only an empty preview.
Prompt ideas that suit a phone screen
Prompts work best when they describe both the artwork and the layout. Ask for a vertical composition, identify where the subject belongs, and request negative space for interface elements. Generate several variations rather than expecting the first result to be usable.
Vertical phone wallpaper, moonlit alpine lake, deep navy and violet palette, crisp silhouette, open dark space in the upper third, no textMinimal abstract wallpaper, flowing electric-blue and black ribbons, high contrast, clean negative space, designed for a smartphone lock screen, no letteringRetro-futurist city at night, vertical composition, subject placed low in frame, dark upper area for clock and notifications, neon magenta and cyan, no text
“No text” is useful because AI-generated lettering is often malformed. If the result is too busy, simplify the prompt, lower the detail, or request a darker background behind icons. Leave breathing room around important objects and re-crop in the phone’s wallpaper preview when necessary.

What it costs now
Dream is currently free to download, but both major store listings indicate in-app purchases. The original report of no apparent purchases was specific to March 2022 and is outdated.
| Store or offer | What is established |
|---|---|
| US iOS listing (checked August 2026) | Dream Premium entries included $6.99 weekly, $9.99 monthly, and $89.99 yearly options. Additional annual price entries were displayed, so there is not one universal price. |
| Google Play | Listed with in-app purchases; the page does not establish that Android pricing or limits match iOS. |
| Web lifetime offer | WOMBO says a lifetime plan may be available through the web app, but availability and price depend on the reader’s region and account. See WOMBO’s lifetime-plan help. |
Do not assume that free download means unlimited generations, every style, full-resolution downloads, or no watermark. Limits and premium requirements can vary by account, platform, promotion, and location. Check the purchase screen’s renewal terms before confirming a subscription.

An image that looks original is not automatically cleared for every use. Personal wallpaper use is different from selling prints, using an image in advertising, making merchandise, or featuring recognizable characters, logos, or people. The 2022 article mentioned physical prints, but it does not establish current commercial licensing terms. Obtain rights advice for commercial projects rather than assuming AI output is unrestricted.
Subscriptions, refunds, and a common recovery problem
Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Cancel mobile billing through the store account that started it: WOMBO’s cancellation instructions cover the relevant app-store paths. Refund requests are handled by the store where the purchase was made; see the refund guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Premium does not appear after reinstalling, update the app and phone software, sign in with the purchasing account, and use the store’s restore-purchase flow. WOMBO lists outdated apps or devices as possible causes in its Premium troubleshooting guide. Save finished wallpapers to your device so an outage or account problem does not remove your only copy. User reports of crashes or missing features show that some people have encountered trouble, but they do not prove a universal service failure.
Who should use Dream?
It is a good fit if you want
- Distinctive wallpapers without learning desktop image-generation tools.
- A phone-first way to experiment with prompts and visual styles.
- More than static backgrounds, such as short AI videos or photo transformations.
Look elsewhere if you need
- Exact dimensions, precise typography, logos, or pixel-level layout control.
- A completely free workflow with no recurring billing.
- Strict privacy for uploaded photographs.
- Clearly documented commercial rights for client work or merchandise.
Phone-first AI-art apps emphasize convenience. Web generators may offer more prompting control, design apps are better for exact text and framing, curated wallpaper libraries provide ready-sized images, and local tools can offer more privacy at the cost of technical setup. The Google Play description names Midjourney, DALL·E, and Stable Diffusion as alternatives, but their current prices, rights, and mobile experiences are not interchangeable with Dream’s.
Verdict
Dream by WOMBO remains an interesting way to make personalized phone wallpapers quickly. It is best understood in 2026 as a broader AI image-and-video platform that can produce wallpapers, not as a dedicated wallpaper catalog. Try it if you enjoy prompt experimentation, but check the current free limits, platform behavior, privacy disclosure, and renewal price first. The app is free to download; the wallpaper workflow may not be free or unlimited.
