There is no single, universally accepted “Zen colors” palette. The phrase usually points to either a five-color temple banner or the international Buddhist flag, and those objects use different color sets and explanations. Identify the display first, then interpret its colors according to the tradition that uses it.
Two displays commonly called “Zen colors”
Zen is a school of Buddhism, not the name of one standardized color chart. In Japan and elsewhere, color symbolism appears on several Buddhist ritual objects. The two most likely references are a temple curtain or streamer and the international Buddhist flag.

Fukuganji’s five-color Rinzai banner
Fukuganji explains its five-colored curtain as a symbolic representation of the Buddha’s teaching: “この五色はお釈迦様の教えを象徴的に表した色だと言われ今日まで伝えられてきました。” The meanings below belong to that temple’s explanation, rather than to a universal Zen standard.
Blue
Blue represents the Buddha’s hair. Fukuganji associates it with zazen and meditative stability.

The international Buddhist flag
The Japan Buddhist Federation describes a different five-color set for the international Buddhist flag: blue, yellow, red, white and saffron. The design has vertical bands of those colors and a final horizontal band containing the same sequence. The saffron vertical and horizontal areas meet, creating an L-shaped section and six visible color areas.

According to the Federation’s institutional history, the flag was formally adopted in 1950 at the first World Buddhist Conference in Sri Lanka. The Federation also says it was adopted in Japan at the second All-Japan Buddhist Conference at Eiheiji in 1954. Those dates are reported in that account.
The Federation connects the colors with six-colored light radiating from the Buddha, citing the “無礙解道” section of the Khuddaka Nikāya. This is the Federation’s explanation of the symbolism; interpretations should not be transferred automatically to a temple curtain that uses another palette.
Why Buddhist color lists differ
“Five colors” describes a recurring symbolic pattern, not one fixed list. The New Jōdo-shū Buddhist Dictionary gives blue, yellow, red, white and black, with associations to the five directions and five elements. Its entry also notes variation in Buddhist flags; see 五色.

Naritasan Shinshōji’s Q&A explains that five-colored temple curtains basically use blue, yellow, red, white and black, but that black may be replaced by saffron or purple, and blue may appear as green. Naritasan says its own curtains use green and purple. Its account is at 成田山Q&A.
Quick Recap
These substitutions can reflect different schools, regional practices, artistic conventions or the particular ritual object. A five-color Shinto banner based on the five phases belongs to a separate religious context and should not be treated as a Zen or Buddhist color explanation.
How to identify the colors on a banner or flag
- Identify the object. Decide whether you are looking at the international Buddhist flag, a temple curtain, a streamer or another ritual item.
- Find the institutional or school context. A Rinzai temple, Jōdo institution and another Buddhist organization may explain similar colors differently.
- Record the colors as actually shown. Note whether blue is rendered green, or black is replaced by saffron or purple.
- Use that source’s meanings. Do not combine Fukuganji’s purple-robed interpretation with the international flag’s saffron section as though they were one system.
There is no source-backed ranking that makes one banner set more “Zen” than another. The most accurate description names the object, tradition and explanation together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are purple and saffron the same Zen color?
No. Purple appears in Fukuganji’s five-color Rinzai banner, while saffron is the fifth color in the Japan Buddhist Federation’s description of the international Buddhist flag. They belong to different color schemes.
