Paint sprayers are the ideal DIY tool for big painting tasks. What may take a day or two with a paintbrush could take a few hours with a paint gun. However, not all paint sprayers can handle lacquer and sealers. If you use the wrong sprayer, your final result could be messy with an uneven surface.

[img_block amz_url=”https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Graco%20Magnum%20257025%20Project%20Painter%20Plus%20Paint%20Sprayer&tag=thatpainter05-20″ img_url=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61KCp-aFnzL._AC_SL1000_.jpg” prod_name=”Graco Magnum 257025 Project Painter Plus Paint Sprayer”]

Our number one choice is one of a kind. Graco Magnum 257025 is an exceptional airless paint sprayer and unlike many airless paint guns, it works very well with lacquer paint.

One of the highlights of this paint sprayer is its adjustable settings which allow you to set the pressure and material flow to your desired level. This is extremely beneficial for helping the spray gun deal with lacquer paint.

The Graco Magnum 257025 is compatible with spray tips 0.009, 0.001, 0.013, and 0.015. However, if you are using lacquer paint, it’s recommended that you use the 0.013 tip.

This sprayer features a powerful 2/8 HP motor that can deliver up to 2800 PSI. As well as power, this tool is a speedy machine. It’s able to spray up to 0.24 gallons per minute so you can get your projects done in half the time. However, the paint quality tends to decrease at full speed so we advise you to stay at lower levels to be on the safe side.

The sprayer is supremely easy to use and has enough capacity to spray up to 50 gallons per year. Coming with a hose adaptor that allows you to connect to your garden hose, you can maintain the Graco Magnum with ease. It also includes a 50-foot paint hose so you can reach those hard to get corners.

This is one for big projects, especially when you consider its higher price range. If you have a smaller project coming up, this may not be the right one for you.

Pros

  • Very powerful – Built with a ⅜ HP motor that delivers 2800 PSI so your painting projects can be done with ease
  • Highly durable – Allows you to spray up to 50 gallons per year
  • Easily adjustable – You can adjust the gun’s pressure and flow speed to suit your requirements
  • Includes a hose adaptor – Able to connect your garden hose for easy maintenance or a paint hose to paint harder to reach areas

Cons

  • Can overspray – Without care and attention, this paint gun is prone to overspray

3. Best Budget: Wagner Spraytech 0518080 Control Spray Max HVLP Paint or Stain Sprayer

[img_block amz_url=”https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Wagner%20Spraytech%200518080%20Control%20Spray%20Max%20HVLP%20Paint%20or%20Stain%20Sprayer&tag=thatpainter05-20″ img_url=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81zHK29p5nL._AC_SL1500_.jpg” prod_name=”Wagner Spraytech 0518080 Control Spray Max HVLP Paint or Stain Sprayer”]

There are many reasons why the Wagner Spraytech 0518080 is a popular HVLP gun. One reason is because of its build and body. It is constructed with a stationary body that allows the weight of the paint and motor to stay on the ground. Therefore, you only have to carry the lightweight spray gun.

The spray gun and stationary body are connected via a 20-foot paint hose. This allows you to move around freely without having to lug around the whole sprayer. Along with a 1qt. Paint cup, the Wagner Spraytech offers everything you need.

If you regularly work with wood, this paint sprayer is the one for you. Its two-stage motor is extremely helpful when dealing with lacquer paint, especially when applying it to furniture or wooden cabinets.

Adjustability is always a welcome addition to paint sprayers and this provides just that. You are able to adjust the pressure and material flow speed to end up with a perfect, smooth finish. Furthermore, you can also adjust the air cap to a horizontal, vertical, or round position to suit your requirements.

You may have a struggle trying to clean this sprayer, however. It tends to cause some mess after being used and the paint container doesn’t include a very large entering. Therefore, you will need a brush to clean the insides properly.

That being said, in terms of versatility and ease of use, the Wagner Spraytech 0518080 is certainly one to consider.

  • Powerful – Features a two-stage motor to spray paint with force at a fast rate
  • Adjustable – Allows you to adjust the pressure and material flow speed to your needs
  • Includes a hose – Comes with a 20-foot paint hose so you can move freely without carrying the whole sprayer everywhere

Cons

  • Very hard to clean – Due to a small entering in its paint container, you would need a brush to clean out the inside which can be frustrating

4. Best Lightweight: Wagner 0529021 FLEXiO 890 Stationary HVLP Paint Sprayer

[img_block amz_url=”https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Wagner%200529021%20FLEXiO%20890%20Stationary%20HVLP%20Paint%20Sprayer&tag=thatpainter05-20″ img_url=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61fEa4DYJ5L._AC_SL1000_.jpg” prod_name=”Wagner 0529021 FLEXiO 890 Stationary HVLP Paint Sprayer”]

It’s double Wagner time! The Wagner 0529021 FLEXIO 890 paint sprayer also has a stationary body which keeps the weight of the paint and its sprayer on the ground. If you like the idea of only carrying a lightweight HVLP gun around while working, this could be the one for you.

While this model comes with a shorter hose measuring 11 feet compared to our previous Wagner entry which had a hose of 20 feet, the 0529021 can be used for just about everything. It is ideal for use on cabinets, furniture, walls, and much more. There is no doubt that you will love the results this offers, especially with lacquer paint.

This sprayer is unique in a number of ways but the obvious highlight is that it comes equipped with two nozzles; the detail nozzle and the iSpray nozzle. The detail nozzle is useful when applying a fine finish on a surface while the iSpray nozzle is excellent for larger projects.

Another impressive feature is the X-Boost. This helps you adjust the pressure and material flow to your requirements with absolute ease.

A bonus of purchasing this kit is just that; it’s a kit. Included are two powerful guns and all the supplies you need to maintain them. For the money, you get a lot!

The first gun is referred to as the coverage tool. It is a little bit smaller than the other model, known as a professional-grade spray gun. It comes fully equipped with a 550ml paint cup which provides excellent coverage with clear coats.

The second gun is smaller in size and ideal for cramped spaces such as intricate spots on old lacquer cabinets. This is the ideal gun for when you don’t want to strip down an entire project. This comes with a 120ml cup which is more than enough for smaller projects.

Both guns come with an all-purpose spray tip and are perfect for lacquers. However, you may have to thin the paint out a little before use.

Buyer’s Guide

Not all paint sprayers work with lacquer. Unfortunately, many of us find out this the hard way but you don’t have to!

To ensure you get the correct paint gun for your requirements, there are some features and factors that you need to take into account.

Many HVLP models come with unique features so choosing one for your needs can be difficult. Nonetheless, you should only focus on the features you require rather than looking for one with as many features as possible.

To help you understand what to look for in a paint sprayer, we have included everything you should consider below.

The Sprayer Type

When you’re dealing with lacquer paint, it is recommended that you do not use airless paint sprayers. Although they can do an adequate job and some can be very good, other models tend to produce better results.

Airless paint sprayers are prone to making a bigger mess. This is especially true when being used with lacquer paint. The best lacquer paint sprayers are usually the HVLP’s or sprayers that have similar technology such as LVLP models.

Fuji Spray 2805-T75G Mini-Mite 5 Platinum - T75G Gravity HVLP Spray System
  • 5-Stage turbine produces 9.5Psi
  • Features the noise reduction feature + Heat Dissipation Chamber (HDC)
  • Professional spray gun features convenient side pattern control knob to adjust size of Fan pattern from small to large

These guns do not make such a mess and often deliver a smooth and even finish. To make your life even easier, you should also aim to buy a cordless paint sprayer. These are easier to move around with so you can spray hard-to-reach corners. They are also more lightweight. On the other hand, corded paint sprayers tend to provide a more professional finish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Tip Size

The tips are vital components of a paint sprayer, especially when using one with different lacquer paints. On the whole, different paints usually require different spraying tips.

For instance, if you are using thick paint, then you will need to use a large paint tip. If you are spraying a thin material, a smaller tip is required.

The tip’s size also depends on the type of paint sprayer. HVLP paint sprayers require a larger tip for the same paint type while airless paint sprayers need a smaller tip due to their power.

Lacquer is classified as a thin paint so you shouldn’t need a large spray tip. A 1.5 mm tip should suffice with an HVLP gun while a 1.33 mm tip should work well with an airless paint sprayer.

Overall, most paint sprayers come equipped with 3 different paint tips. This is to save you from paying extra for additional paint tips. Always make sure that you find a sprayer with paint tips included in the package to save you money and time.

The Price

It is recommended that you spend a little more cash on a lacquer paint sprayer than a normal paint model. This is because lacquer paint sprayers require more precision and accuracy with more adjustments.

Try and find a range of models that provide the same features and then compare their prices. This will limit the risk of you spending more than you should have.

Do your research into different types of sprayers and their prices. If you’re not careful with your budget, you could end up with a poor quality paint sprayer or one that is very overpriced.

Types of Lacquer Spray Guns

As we have mentioned, there are a few types of paint sprayers available on the market. It is generally agreed that the best are the HVLP, LVLP, and airless models.

These tend to offer the highest amount of pressure which generally results in a better lacquer finish. Higher pressure helps the sprayer pass the lacquer through the gun more easily and with a wide nozzle, your finish should always be smooth.

HVLP Lacquer Sprayer

These types of (hlvp) paint sprayers don’t usually provide a lot of pressure but what they lack in pressure, they make up for in nozzle size. Their large nozzles can be easily adjusted to spray lacquer paint. However, you may have to thin the paint out beforehand for a suitable finish.

LVLP Lacquer Sprayer

The only drawback of these is that you need an additional air compressor for them to function properly. However, once this air compressor is attached, the sprayer gets enough pressure to deal with lacquer paint. These are best suited for smaller projects rather than larger-scale painting jobs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Airless Lacquer Sprayers

When it comes to lacquer paint, airless sprayers are the best option. These provide high-pressure levels that can be adjusted to your preferred setting and most have enough power to easily work with lacquer.

Best Value
HomeRight Super Finish Max HVLP Paint and Stain Sprayer, 3 Brass Tips
  • Life changing paint sprayer: this paint sprayer requires less thinning compared to finish max or other hand-held paint sprayers
  • Easy to use for eager Painters: fast and easy setup, multiple spray settings and quick cleaning make this sprayer a top pick for do-it-yourselfers
  • Lightweight: despite having more power than the finish max, this paint sprayer is still lightweight in the user’s hand
  • Spray everything with less thinning: ideal for spraying a smooth finish on fences, decks, furniture, cabinets, crafts, dressers or anything you want
  • Best purchase you will ever make: save money by using this paint sprayer to tackle all of your household painting and staining projects

Airless sprayers compress paint instead of using air and this normally results in a bubble-free finish. One drawback is that these models are typically more expensive than HVLP or LVLP paint sprayers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a paint sprayer for lacquer?

If you want to get the job done quicker, then paint sprayers are the way forward. Although you can still get great use out of paint rollers for certain projects, spraying lacquer with a paint sprayer is far easier and more effective.

The finish quality is generally much better and smoother with less mess as you work. The only disadvantage of paint sprayers is that they can be up to 10x more expensive than a regular paintbrush.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nonetheless, if you’re working with lacquer paint, then you will always want great results and spray guns are the answer. Also, paint sprayers tend to be all-in-one. For instance, you can use a spray gun for refinishing projects, coating different layers, as well as priming.

Furthermore, if you want to add multiple lacquer coatings, then the easiest and quickest method of doing so is with a paint sprayer.

How often should I clean the air filter?

It is critical that you regularly maintain your spray gun’s air filter. If you want to get continuous professional-grade finishes from your spray gun, then the air filter must be cleaned at least twice a week.

HVLP paint sprayers should be cleaned more often than airless models. However, cleaning is simple to do and doesn’t take very long at all. Regular maintenance will ensure your paint sprayer lasts for longer and will save you money on buying new spray guns over time.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

What should the fluid set be when using lacquer paint?

The fluid set is dependent on the type of paint you use. It is important that you consider this before buying any paint sprayer.

Fluid set 4 is ideal for paints such as lacquer, stains, varnishes, urethane, primers, and similarly textured paints.

Fluid set 3 is best suited to epoxies, varnish, stains, and can also work on lacquers.

Fluid set 2 should be used for non-wiping stains as well as auto finishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When using lacquer paint, your fluid set should be 3 or 4. It is advised you start with fluid set 4 and make some tests to see if it is right for you. Compare both numbers 3 and 4 and decide for yourself. Fluid set 2 will typically result in a bad finish so this should be avoided.
